Messina and the Aeolian Islands: Culture and Volcanic Landscapes
Accommodation in Messina
Off Messina’s Tyrrhenian coast and north of Sicily’s northern coast, the Aeolian Islands lie in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea. The archipelago includes seven main islands—Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Alicudi, Filicudi, Stromboli and Panarea—as well as five small islets: Basiluzzo, Dattilo, Lisca Nera, Bottaro and Lisca Bianca. The Aeolian Islands preserve an outstanding record of the formation and destruction of volcanic islands. They are listed under UNESCO criterion (viii); their volcanic morphology is considered a classic example of the development of volcanology.
Nature Among Extinct and Active Volcanoes
On Salina, the Riserva Naturale Le Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri protects the Mediterranean vegetation and wildlife of the extinct Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri volcanoes. All the Aeolian Islands except Lipari are designated wholly or in part as protected areas under the European Habitats and Birds Directives. Numerous white pumice beaches line the coast of Lipari. Stromboli is the only island in the archipelago with persistent volcanic activity. The extinct volcanoes of Salina and Stromboli’s ongoing volcanic activity thus represent different forms of volcanic landscape.
Volcanoes and Unique Nature Experiences
On Stromboli, guides lead night ascents gradually toward the summit, depending on the phase of the eruption. Access to the summit depends on volcanic conditions and official safety regulations. Climbing Vulcano’s crater offers panoramic views of the island and the other six Aeolian Islands. As access conditions can change, check local restrictions before setting out.
Off the coast of Vulcano, there are sulfurous areas in open water with warm water, considered natural bathing and thermal experiences. Volcanic and thermal conditions can change, so follow local safety advice. Panarea has intense underwater fumaroles associated with diving activities. Water access and safety conditions there can vary depending on volcanic activity.
Culture and Archaeology on the Islands
On Lipari, the Castello complex includes an old Norman cloister; the Cattedrale di Lipari dates from the 13th century. Sites at Terme San Calogero include a tholos oven from the Early Bronze Age, as well as Greek and Roman pools and channels for directing hot sulfurous water. A small church on Lipari also offers an exceptional view of Salina, Filicudi and Alicudi.
The Museo Civico di Lingua brings together ethnographic-anthropological and archaeological departments in two buildings by Lake Lingua. In Pollara, the Chiesa di Sant'Onofrio is an example of local religious architecture dating from 1853. Together, these places reveal different cultural aspects of the archipelago: archaeological remains, religious architecture and a museum with ethnographic and archaeological departments.
Malvasia and Salina Cuisine
The fertile Valdichiesa valley on Salina is planted with Malvasia vineyards. Malvasia delle Lipari is a naturally sweet Passito wine made exclusively in the Aeolian Islands. In Lingua, eateries serve “u pani cunzatu”: bread topped with caper pesto, almonds, grilled eggplant, cucunci, tomatoes, mint and grated baked ricotta. Winemaking and this dish offer two specific insights into the culinary side of the island group.
Departures to the Island Ports
Liberty Lines provides real-time departures from the Aeolian ports of Alicudi, Filicudi, Ginostra, Lipari, Panarea, Stromboli and Vulcano, as well as Santa Marina and Rinella on Salina. Check departures before you travel, as schedules and ports served may change.
