Contrada Lacco: Church of the Virgin Mary, rolling hills and Luminaria
Accommodation in Contrada Lacco
Contrada Lacco brings together devotion to the Virgin Mary, the Luminaria del Lacco and a hilltop settlement. When choosing a hotel destination, this means culture and religious tradition alongside a quiet rural setting. The Chiesa della Madonna dei Sette Dolori is located in Contrada Lacco and is dedicated to Maria SS. dei Sette Dolori. The hilltop settlement of Lacco lies about 500 metres above sea level and is divided between the municipalities of Brolo and Piraino.
Church, devotion and local character
The Chiesa della Madonna dei Sette Dolori is considered a subsidiary church and an architectural heritage site. It is also regarded as a spiritual focal point for the local community. The quiet rural setting of Contrada Lacco invites peaceful contemplation and prayer. Its dedication, religious significance and landscape give the place a clear cultural focus.
The road from Iannello to Lacco is lined with olive trees and forms a distinctive landscape feature. Together with its elevation, this creates a setting in which the rolling hills are a clear part of the settlement’s character. Lacco’s division between Brolo and Piraino is a distinctive feature of its geographical position.
Landscapes and viewpoints in Piraino
The Parco Suburbano “La Pineta” offers a viewpoint with panoramic vistas from the hills to the sea and the Aeolian Islands. Guardiola is another viewpoint, outside Piraino’s old town and at an elevation of 380 metres. Guardiola once served as an observation post; its cannons were pointed towards the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The Torre Saracena also tells the story of coastal surveillance: it was built for defence and to watch for possible invaders from the sea. From its strategic position, it commands a broad stretch of coastline. The tower and Guardiola thus recall historic surveillance functions, while La Pineta is distinguished above all by views from the hills across the sea to the Aeolian Islands.
Cultural sites in Piraino
Piraino’s tourist attractions also include the Museo del Viaggio in Gliaca di Piraino. It is housed in a former post station belonging to the noble Denti family and tells the story of travel through Sicily. The Chiesa Madre e Catacombe offers further sacred heritage: its features include a gilded wooden altar, an 18th-century Sicilian organ and a crypt containing mummified priests.
The Luminaria del Lacco and its tradition
The Luminaria del Lacco commemorates a fire in which the statue of the Virgin Mary remained unharmed. According to tradition, the event dates back to the time when a Basilian abbey stood on the site of today’s church. During the Luminaria, the fire is reenacted with images and music, before more than 500 illuminated hot-air balloons rise into the night sky. Traditional elements also include the “pignateddi” games.
Seasoned crushed olives and “carni 'nfurnata” are offered for tasting at the Luminaria. Preparing “carni 'nfurnata” is also part of a Sicilian tradition involving a slow process: it begins at 9 p.m. and ends at midday the following day. The festival thus brings together not only religious remembrance and imagery, but also traditional games and food.
