Discover Castroreale
Accommodation in Castroreale
Castroreale lies among the Peloritani Mountains. The walk through the historic centre begins at Piazza delle Aquile. Churches, works of art, festival traditions and evidence of local history offer different focal points for your stay.
Churches, art and architectural history
The Duomo was built in the first third of the 17th century and dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Inside is a polyptych of the Nativity, created by Giovan Filippo Criscuolo in 1550. The Duomo also houses a sundial with a camera obscura system, designed by Nicolò Perroni Basquez in 1854. Sacred art and a scientific-architectural instrument meet here in one place.
The Chiesa della Candelora dates from the late 14th century and was probably the chapel of Frederick II of Aragon’s castle. Every year on 2 February, the Feast of Candelora is celebrated there with a blessing of candles. Parts of Castroreale’s fortification system belong to the Chiesa di Santa Marina. These include a tower into which the Chapel of San Lorenzo was incorporated.
The Chiesa di Sant’Agata also preserves important works of art: it houses an Annunciation by Antonello Gagini, dating from 1519. The church is also associated with the procession tradition surrounding the statue Cristo Lungo. The statue is carried in procession on 23 and 25 August, as well as during Holy Week.
The Museo Civico is housed in the former Oratorio di San Filippo Neri and includes a Salvator Mundi by Polidoro Caldara da Caravaggio. Another collection of sacred art is held at the Museo Parrocchiale e degli Arredi Sacri in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Works preserved there include five panels from the late 14th century and a Flemish triptych from the 16th century. The two museums therefore offer different ways to explore the town’s art history.
Tower, views and trails
The Torre di Federico II is the only surviving remnant of the castle built by Frederick II of Aragon in 1324. From the tower, panoramic views extend across the Peloritani Mountains to the Aeolian Islands. Architecture and landscape come together here: the tower recalls the former castle, while the view stretches from the mountains to the archipelago.
Itinerario 2 offers a different focus. It starts in Castroreale, is mostly a mountain route and follows a mule track into the Vallone Pumia. Its route description is therefore quite different from the walk through the historic centre: here, the mountain landscape and trail shape the experience. No walking time or difficulty level is specified for this route.

Festivals and local specialities
The festival calendar combines religious traditions with local events: alongside Candelora on 2 February, the Sagra del Biscotto Castriciano takes place every August. The processions with Cristo Lungo are listed for 23 and 25 August, as well as during Holy Week. If you would like to plan your travel dates around one of these events, check the specific dates against your plans in advance.
Castroreale is especially known for its biscuits, including u biscottu castricianu and u biscottu da badissa. Together with its churches, collections and historic buildings, these specialities give the town a distinctive cultural character. When planning your visit, you can choose to focus on art and architectural history, a festival date, a mountain route or panoramic views.
