Discover Pettineo: Culture Between History and Tradition
Accommodation in Pettineo
Pettineo offers several cultural points of interest to consider when choosing a destination: a compact historic layout of lanes, courtyards and architecture; buildings from different centuries; and local festival and agricultural traditions. The topics range from medieval origins to contemporary art.
Historic Buildings and Sacred Art
The Castello dei Ventimiglia has historic origins dating back to the 13th century. Only a few remains have survived, visible from a distance as you approach Pettineo. The Torre Migaido complex includes a fortified structure from the 14th century, with a keep and a chapel whose frescoes depict Christ Pantocrator.
The Convento dei Cappuccini was founded in 1579. It includes a seedling nursery with eight basins, considered the only one of its kind still preserved in Sicily. The convent also houses a late Baroque altarpiece featuring the painting “Madonna degli Angeli,” created by Guglielmo Borremans in 1722.
The Chiesa di San Sebastiano was built after 1580 on a site thought to have already held a shrine to the martyr. It was rebuilt as a three-aisled basilica with colonnades, capitals, arcades and windows. These architectural features reveal the different elements of its design.
Piazza Duomo is home to the Statua della Costanza, an allegorical representation of strength. The sculptor and engineer Geronimo d’Ajeni, from Pettineo, created it in 1639. Another work with historical significance is the Ponte Migaido, built by architect Giovan Battista Vaccarini in 1750. It was a historic crossing on the Antica via del Grano between the Tyrrhenian Sea and central Sicily.
Festivals and the Limone Seccagno
At Easter, Pettineo celebrates “u scuontru,” the traditional meeting of the statues of Mary and the risen Jesus Christ in the center of the square. In May, the patron saint festival is celebrated with the traditional “vutata di l’Altari.” It includes an evening procession carrying the statue of Sant’Oliva through the streets of the town. The two customs give religious celebrations distinct forms: a meeting of statues at Easter and a procession for the patron saint festival.
The Limone Seccagno di Pettineo is also part of the area’s local identity. The Sagra del Limone Seccagno takes place every year. The lemon is included in Sicily’s list of traditional agri-food products (PAT). It is cultivated using significantly less water than the average citrus cultivation in Sicily. This local lemon thus brings together an annual festival, a traditional product and a distinctive cultivation method.
Art in the Town
The Museo Domestico connects visitors and residents through contemporary artworks displayed in private spaces. Via Credenza is also home to “Flusso dinamico,” a mural by Andrea Buglisi. The work presents sport as a means of inclusion. These two artistic points of interest add their own distinctive notes alongside the older churches, bridges and festival traditions: one connects people through contemporary art, while the other addresses social participation.
