Vulcano Porto: Crater Trails, Thermal Sites and Harbour
Accommodation in Vulcano Porto
Vulcano Porto is a useful point of reference when planning your trip to Vulcano. The INGV Punto Informativo is located at Porto di Levante in the centre of Vulcano’s built-up area. It is also near the access routes to Gran Cratere and Vulcano’s historic centre. This gives you a specific landmark to help organise the destinations you want to visit during your stay. When looking for a hotel in Vulcano Porto, you can start by considering whether crater trails, coastal spots or ferry travel are your priority.
Crater Trails and Views
The route to Gran Cratere di Vulcano is almost seven kilometres long. The round trip takes about three hours. This estimate refers to the full outward and return journey. Conditions and access may change with volcanic activity, so check current access information before setting out.
You can walk the crater rim trail, which reaches almost 400 metres above sea level at its highest point. From there, the view extends across the entire Aeolian Islands archipelago. The two descriptions focus on different aspects of planning: the route to Gran Cratere is described in terms of distance and round-trip duration, while the crater rim trail is described in terms of its circuit, elevation and views.
Vulcanello and the Volcanic Landscape
An asphalt road leads from Porto di Levante to the Vulcanello peninsula. This is one of Vulcano’s three original eruption centres. Another distinctive landscape feature on Vulcano is Valle dei Mostri: lava rock formations shaped by water and wind lie on fine black sand. Sand, rock and erosion together shape the landscape here.
A path leads southwest from Porto di Levante, out of the town centre and to the end of the shopping street. If you plan to use this path for a hike, check local access restrictions beforehand. The road connection to the peninsula and this path through town are separate points of reference for your planning.
Thermal Sites and Coast
Vulcano’s natural warm thermal mud bath was opened to visitors in the 1960s, after the surface crust had been removed. Pozza dei Fanghi is considered a freely accessible open-air thermal spring. Check locally for current access information before bathing.
Spiaggia delle Fumarole is located within Ponente Bay. Sulphurous vapours warm the water there, while a rock wall and Mediterranean scrub shelter the beach. Bathing conditions may be regulated. If you plan to swim, check locally for the current conditions.
Arriving via Porto di Levante
Ferries to Vulcano depart from the port of Milazzo and the port of Naples. Porto di Levante is Vulcano Porto’s passenger harbour for ferries and hydrofoils. For your journey, it helps to distinguish the two roles: Milazzo and Naples are the departure ports mentioned, while Porto di Levante is the passenger harbour on Vulcano. Check the timetable for your travel date.
The harbour and the INGV Punto Informativo are both at Porto di Levante, but serve different purposes: the harbour handles passenger traffic, while the information centre is near the access routes to Gran Cratere and Vulcano’s historic centre. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider your arrival and finding your way around separately.
