When looking for a hotel in Leni, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: the local sights range from protected island vegetation and a black sand beach to hiking trails, archaeological sites and local traditions. Which details matter to you depends on whether you want to focus on nature, a coastal village, outdoor activities or history.

Natural landscape and protected area

The Le Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri nature reserve lies within the municipalities of Leni, Malfa and Santa Marina di Salina. It was established to preserve natural vegetation and restore Mediterranean woodland. The area is mainly covered in evergreen maquis, along with extensive stands of chestnut, oak, pine and holm oak. The Eleonora’s falcon (Falco eleonorae) is considered a natural symbol of Salina.

The information about the protected area highlights two aspects: its diverse vegetation and a named natural symbol of the island. If you are interested in the natural landscape while planning your trip, these features give you a concrete idea of what makes the reserve distinctive.

Rinella: black sand and a small harbour

Rinella beach is small, crescent-shaped and made up of black sand. The small harbour, where hydrofoils dock, is right next to it. The beach and harbour are neighbouring landmarks, so you can take both the coast and your arrival point into account when planning.

Trails towards Monte Fossa delle Felci

The Leni–Monte Fossa and Madonna del Terzito–Monte Fossa trails are 2 km and 1.8 km long, respectively, and are described as moderately difficult. They have different starting points and routes. The Leni–Monte Fossa trail begins at the entrance on Via Caserta, near the primary school, and leads towards Monte Fossa delle Felci. Dense vegetation provides shade. The ascent takes about 180 minutes and the descent about 120 minutes.

The Madonna del Terzito–Monte Fossa trail begins next to the Madonna del Terzito Sanctuary in Valdichiesa and leads to Monte Fossa delle Felci via numerous hairpin bends and several crossings of the road. When comparing the trails, their starting points and routes are therefore relevant as well as their similar lengths. Trail conditions may change, and vegetation can vary by season. Check the condition of the trail before setting out.

Churches and archaeological history

The present-day Church of San Gaetano dates from 1853. Access is available by request only. A boat procession associated with the church takes place every year on 7 August.

The Madonna del Terzito Sanctuary is located in Valdichiesa on the island of Salina, within the municipality of Leni. It was declared a sanctuary on 8 December 1969. The present-day sanctuary dates from the 17th century and stands on the ruins of older buildings. Access must be requested before visiting.

Archaeological sites also offer insight into the early settlement of the Aeolian Islands. The Neolithic site at Rinella (Leni), together with the Castellaro site on Lipari, is considered one of the oldest known human settlements in the Aeolian Islands. It dates to the mid-6th millennium BC. Punta Megna, just south of Leni, is home to an Early and Middle Bronze Age settlement dating from the 23rd to the 15th century BC.

Local traditions and planning your visit

The traditional Tavuliata in honour of San Giuseppe Artigiano takes place in Leni every year on 1 May. Local dishes and typical Aeolian sweets are presented at the event. The Tavuliata notably includes a minestrone made with pasta, chickpeas and various legumes. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the event date before travelling.

Azienda Agricola Salvatore d’Amico is one of the oldest businesses on Salina, is a small family-run operation and is based in the municipality of Leni. If you are considering a visit, confirm the specific visiting arrangements and operating conditions before your trip.
