Cesarò: Nature, Trails and Local Traditions
Accommodation in Cesarò
Cesarò can be explored through several specific travel themes: the Dorsale dei Nebrodi, a mountain biking stage, Lago Biviere, and local festival, architectural and food culture. If you are looking for a hotel in Cesarò, first consider which focus you would like to shape your stay. A long hiking stage, a mountain biking route and a highland wetland offer different starting points for planning your day; festivals, castle ruins and traditional dishes add to the town’s cultural and scenic character.
Hiking the Dorsale dei Nebrodi
The third stage of the Dorsale dei Nebrodi starts at Portella Femmina Morta in Cesarò. It is 25 kilometres long, takes seven hours and is of moderate difficulty. The seven-hour duration gives you a clear timeframe for planning your day; the moderate difficulty rating provides additional context for the hike. Along the way, the stage passes through the Bosco di Mangalaviti, a tall beech forest with far-reaching viewpoints.
The SI-C V21-A mountain biking stage
Another route is the SI-C V21-A mountain biking stage. It starts near Portella Femmina Morta on the SS 289 S. Fratello–Cesarò state road, leads to Lago Maulazzo, crosses the Torrente Cuderi and reaches Lago Biviere. Trail conditions may vary on both routes; check them before setting out. The routes differ clearly in how they can be assessed: the Dorsale can be judged by its duration and difficulty, while the mountain biking stage can be considered by its route between the named lakes and its crossing of the Torrente Cuderi.
Lago Biviere and its natural environment
Lago Biviere lies within the municipality of Cesarò at an altitude of 1,278 metres and covers about 18 hectares. Because of its distinctive plant and animal life, it is considered the most valuable natural wetland in the Sicilian highlands. During the summer months, blooms of the microalga Euglena sanguinea can turn the water red. The lake’s altitude and area are fixed characteristics; the red coloration, by contrast, is a possible seasonal phenomenon and should not be expected on every visit.
Festivals and architectural history
San Calogero is still celebrated twice a year in Cesarò: on 18 June and 21 August. These specific dates can help you plan a festival-related stay; individual programme events may vary. If a festival date is a deciding factor for your trip, check the programme for your visit date. Architectural landmarks include the ruins of the Castello ducale di Cesarò, where a Baroque sandstone portal has been preserved.
Traditional products and cuisine
Local food culture is also shaped by specific traditions. Traditional dairy products from Cesarò include ricotta, provole, tuma, canestrato and pecorino. The homemade “i maccheroni” are prepared on feast days with tomato sauce, pork or castrated goat meat, and topped with grated salted ricotta. Ricotta therefore appears both as a traditional dairy product and as an ingredient in the feast-day dish, showing two different roles for the same product in local cuisine.
