When looking for a hotel for a trip to Moio Alcantara, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: local history, religious traditions, or trails and landscapes. The compact historic centre, the ethnographic museum and the routes around Monte Mojo give the destination distinct points of interest.

Historic Centre and Farming Heritage

At the Museo Etnografico, you can see objects and tools used by Sicilian farmers between the 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum also includes a faithfully reconstructed traditional farmhouse, with authentic furnishings and details. The collection and house offer two concrete insights into the town’s farming heritage: the tools and everyday objects, and the furnishings of a traditional home.

The compact historic centre is characterised by narrow lanes and old churches. The town’s official founding is also part of its history: it dates back to 1602, when the royal authorities granted the licentia populandi.

Churches and Local Traditions

The Parrocchia Santa Maria delle Grazie is the mother church of Moio Alcantara and one of the town’s most important places of worship. It houses a wooden crucifix attributed to Frate Umile da Petralia. Every year, the crucifix is honoured with a solemn procession during the Festa del Santissimo Crocifisso. A short walk from the mother church, the ruins of the Chapel of S. Antonino can be seen.

Festivals also provide distinct landmarks throughout the year. The Fiera di Mojo is one of Sicily’s oldest livestock fairs and takes place in the last week of September. If you would like to time your stay to coincide with the fair, check the specific event dates in advance. At the Sagra delle Pesche, participants can sample fresh peaches and culinary specialities made with peaches.

Landscape and Monte Mojo

The landscape around Moio Alcantara includes vineyards, olive groves and citrus orchards. From the summit of Monte Mojo, visitors can walk around the crater and take in views of the Alcantara Valley, from Francavilla to Randazzo, with Mount Etna in the background. Monte Mojo can be reached from the area around the sports ground via a narrow, gently sloping path.

Hiking Trails and Stages

The Sentiero Vulcanetto di Mojo starts in Moio Alcantara and is graded as moderately difficult. The Tindari Trail offers a different kind of route planning: its first stage is 22 kilometres long and runs from Moio Alcantara via Malvagna to Montalbano Elicona. It passes through the historic S. Antonino district. A short detour from the first section leads to the Cuba, a small Byzantine chapel also known as the Trichora.

The Tindari Trail can be completed independently; check the latest route information before setting off. Every year, the Tindari pilgrimage draws hundreds of pilgrims who cross the Peloritani on foot. The trail information helps with different planning questions: the length and sequence of places are given for the first stage of the Tindari Trail, while the difficulty level is provided for the Sentiero Vulcanetto. The narrow, gently sloping path to Monte Mojo starts in the area around the sports ground.
