Roccavaldina offers several points of interest for a trip focused on art, architectural history and past working life. These include the Castello dei Valdina and the Duomo, as well as churches with distinctive artworks and architectural features, a collection of contemporary art, and equipment for processing olives and wine. An e-bike route adds a scenic dimension. These different themes can help you plan your stay around the interests that matter most to you.

Architectural history between the Renaissance and Baroque

The Castello dei Valdina has a Renaissance loggia connecting its two building sections. The baronial palace section features a transitional style between the Renaissance and Baroque. Thus, the same building brings together a connecting architectural feature and a stylistic classification of the palace section. The Duomo is also linked to a historic change in the town: its construction probably began around 1505, after an earthquake destroyed the earlier Chiesa di Gesù e Maria. The date of the start of construction remains an approximate estimate.

Church art and distinctive architectural features

The Duomo houses the panel painting Madonna di Termini by the painter Angelo Chirico. The main chapel also contains a statue of the Madonna delle Grazie, created in 1566 and attributed to Andrea Calamech. The two works differ in form: a panel painting on the one hand, and a statue with a specific date and attribution on the other.

Another art-historical trace can be found at the Chiesa Madonna della Catena. It was built around the year 1000. Its exterior walls, bell tower and façade feature architectural ornaments made from pieces of roof tiles set into the structure. This gives you both an approximate construction date and a specific design feature. The grounds around the Chiesa dei Cappuccini have been developed as a public green space with recreational facilities.

Collection and immersive images

Casa Vermiglia houses a collection of contemporary art that originated as a gift from the painter Nino Cannistraci Tricomi. This offers a different focus from the artworks in the churches: the emphasis is on a contemporary art collection and the story of its donation.

The Sala Immersiva combines historic images of Roccavaldina with an interactive, audio-visual presentation. Its walls are entirely touch-sensitive; virtual mist reveals the images. Each photograph is accompanied by audio fragments, including stories drawn from oral memories and carefully reconstructed ambient sounds. Image, voice and sound come together here, offering a different way of engaging with local history than a single artwork.

Olive and wine processing at the Antico Palmento

The Antico Palmento preserves an old stone mill with a single large millstone. Oxen or mules moved it to grind olives. Nearby are two large wine presses and the associated containers for collecting the must. It was then taken to the cellars and stored in barrels. The equipment illustrates two different processing stages: grinding olives with a moving stone, and pressing, collecting and storing the must.

The Antico Lavatoio also reflects an earlier everyday use: women from Roccavaldina used it until the early 1970s. It adds another facet of local history to the equipment at the Antico Palmento.

E-bike route and panoramic views

The e-bike route starts at the Polo Olivettiano di Roccavaldina and follows gravel roads, technical sections and paved stretches. The variety of surfaces describes the route more precisely than a single surface type would. The route offers panoramic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Aeolian Islands and the surrounding valleys. Alongside the individual buildings and artworks, it offers a way to experience the landscape by bike.
