Quattropani offers a range of ways to plan a stay: the volcanic landscapes near the Cave di Caolino, the Santuario di Maria Santissima della Catena and culinary experiences, some of which require advance reservations. Whether you are mainly interested in geology, sacred history or wine can be explored through specific places and experiences.

Volcanic Landscapes and Trails near the Cave di Caolino

The Cave di Caolino are in the Quattropani district, on the western slope of Lipari. They can be reached via a narrow road that branches off the provincial road towards Ospedale. The white, kaolinized clay formations and kaolin beds define the area; fumarolic gases have intensely colored their surfaces in places. Pale rock formations and striking patches of color sit side by side. From the Cave di Caolino, the view extends to the “Timponi,” Lipari’s oldest geological formations. They formed about 220,000 years ago.

The trail beside the Cave di Caolino showcases secondary volcanism and leads to the cliffs of Palmeto. Along the way, it passes through Mediterranean grasslands where orchids bloom in spring, and by a small pool fed by a thermal spring. Geology, plant life and the pool are among the impressions along this trail. If you are especially interested in volcanic landscapes, you will find specific geological features here; the municipal trekking list also includes the Lipari–Pianoconte–Terme S. Calogero–Quattropani route.

Chiesa Vecchia and the Sanctuary

The Santuario di Maria Santissima della Catena is located in Chiesa Vecchia, at the highest point in Quattropani. It was built in 1588 in honor of the Madonna della Catena. Inside are an 18th-century oil painting of the Blessed Virgin and Child and an 18th-century wooden statue of the Madonna della Catena. The site thus combines its location at the highest point with a clearly identifiable history and two historic works of art.

From Chiesa Vecchia, the view extends across Salina and onward to the more distant islands of Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi. The three-day festival of the Madonna della Catena also takes place between Chiesa Vecchia and Chiesa Nuova. The highlight is the nighttime pilgrimage on the night of September 7–8. Check the specific festival program locally for your travel year.

Wine Tastings and Local Specialties

Tenuta di Castellaro in the Quattropani district offers wine tastings by reservation. A picnic in the vineyard is also available by reservation only. It includes a short walk to a hidden viewpoint. Both experiences combine the vineyard with a planned visit; reservations are required for the tasting and the picnic.

A Menza Quartara offers a different culinary experience: its specialties include bread salad and homemade liqueurs. Alongside the reservation-only experiences at Tenuta di Castellaro, these local specialties provide another specific point of interest when planning your trip.

Staying in Quattropani

Quattropani is connected to the town of Lipari by the scenic road that runs around the island. This connection is a useful point of reference if you are considering Quattropani as a place to stay and would also like to include Lipari in your visit. When choosing a hotel in Quattropani, you can also consider whether your trip will focus more on the trails and geological features, the sanctuary and its festival, or the culinary experiences.
