When looking for a hotel in Tortorici, you can consider whether churches, art and local history or lakes and hiking should shape your trip. The sights offer different highlights: local history includes historic churches and processional traditions, while the lakes in Parco dei Nebrodi offer nature and hiking destinations.

Historic Churches and Works of Art

Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta was built at its present location between 1756 and 1798. It houses paintings by Giuseppe Tomasi, an artist from Tortorici, including works from 1638, 1652 and 1653. The church preserves an artistic heritage spanning five centuries. The dates of the paintings mentioned predate the construction at the present location, bringing together older works of art and later building history.

Chiesa di San Francesco also brings together architectural and art history. It is designated a national monument and was rebuilt at its present location in 1602. The church houses a marble group depicting Saint Francis and Brother Leo. It was commissioned from Antonello Gagini in 1535 and completed by his sons in 1559.

Chiesa dell’Annunciazione, also known as Batia, was built at its present location in 1757. A Clarissan abbey for noble girls was attached to the church. Chiesa di Santa Emerenziana was already in existence in 1607. It stands on a rocky outcrop that protected it from the 1682 flood. The two churches thus point to different chapters in the area’s architectural history.

Collections, Walking Tour and Traditions

The collection at Museo Etnofotografico Franchina–Letizia documents the landscapes, work, crafts, family and community life, as well as the ceremonies and rituals of Tortorici and the wider Nebrodi area. It offers insights into both everyday life and community traditions. In the front garden of Museo Rosario Parasiliti, visitors can see a bell cast in 1676.

The Bula tradition includes a torchlight procession that winds through Tortorici to the beat of drums and ends in Piazza Duomo, in front of Chiesa Santa Maria. During the procession of Saint San Sebastiano, the first stop is at the Calagni River: worshippers walk barefoot through the water while the Vara is paused for prayer. The tourist walking tour of the historic centre begins at Piazza Principe di Napoli and follows a staircase to Via Lo Giudice.

There is also a special connection to nature in Villa comunale “Falcone e Borsellino”: Petagna saniculaefolia Gussonei, a plant species endemic to the Nebrodi area, grows there. Cappella delle Tre Vergini is a votive chapel. Its name is associated with the legend that a Moorish attacker assaulted three maidens at Acquasanta.

Lakes and Hiking in Parco dei Nebrodi

The natural Lago Pisciotto lies at an altitude of 1,250 metres in the area of Tortorici and within Parco dei Nebrodi. It is particularly important because of its many waterbirds. Lago Trearie is also in Parco dei Nebrodi, in the territories of Tortorici and Randazzo. Lago Li Perni differs from these as an artificial body of water: it is surrounded by the beech forests of Parco dei Nebrodi, and its wetland is home to various types of waterside vegetation and attracts both resident and migratory birds. Together, the three lakes offer distinct features: an elevated setting, a protected area shared by two municipalities, and a wetland with diverse birdlife.

The official route to Lago Trearie first follows the Dorsale dei Nebrodi by car to the turnoff for Lago Pisciotto; from there, a hike to Lago Trearie begins. The Sentiero delle Sorgenti is another hiking option: the trail is about 18 kilometres long, takes 7 to 8 hours and is of moderate difficulty. It passes through Tortorici, Bronte and Maniace. About half of it follows a historic route used by shepherds and farmers from Tortorici. The length, duration and difficulty give you an idea of the scope of this hike; allow 7 to 8 hours for it.
