Discover Raccuja
Accommodation in Raccuja
Raccuja is located in the Monti Nebrodi area. Buildings from different periods, silk processing, and local cuisine offer a variety of cultural points of interest; the Itinerario delle Tholos, with its natural and cultural character, adds another dimension.
Castle and Architectural History
Castello Branciforti stands in the upper part of Raccuja’s built-up area. Its location was important for controlling the nearby Regia Trazzera. The extensive rectangular area, the linear two-storey building, and the two-storey round tower at the northeast corner describe the complex through its layout and architectural features.
Raccuja’s origins are traced back to the late 11th century, when the Normans came to Sicily and conquered the island. The religious buildings reflect other periods: Chiesa Madre – Santa Maria del Gesù is a 16th-century church. Chiesa di San Pietro was built around an old medieval tower. Monastero di San Nicolò dates back to the Byzantine period and was rebuilt in the Norman era. San Pietro thus incorporates a medieval tower into the church’s origins, while the monastery’s Byzantine beginnings were followed by a Norman rebuilding.
Piazza XXV Aprile is another landmark of the town’s architecture. It is surrounded by 17th-century palaces and features a notable staircase from the 18th century, made entirely of sandstone. The palaces and the staircase bring together different periods of construction and a distinctive building material.
Silk Processing and Guided Tours
The Museo della Seta is dedicated to the area’s historic tradition of artisanal silk processing in the Monti Nebrodi. As a place of learning and local identity, it helps revive interest in this craft, which shaped the area’s economic history. Its focus differs from that of the buildings: the museum centers on the silk-processing tradition and its economic importance. The Museo della Seta offers free guided tours, available by advance reservation only. If you are planning a tour, arrange your reservation before you arrive.
The Itinerario delle Tholos
The Itinerario delle Tholos combines natural history and culture, and offers a chance to see small, typical rural structures known as “casotti.” Their origins are traced back to pre-Greek times. The focus is thus on a rural architectural form and the historical interpretation of its origins—a different emphasis from the history of the castle, churches, and monastery.
Important for planning: the Itinerario is not a well-marked nature trail that can be explored on foot. The individual Tholos vary in how accessible they are and how easy they are to reach. Check local conditions before setting out on the route.
Mountain Views and Local Cuisine
From Raccuja, you can enjoy mountain views across a varied landscape that stretches from low hills to the Nebrodi mountains. This landscape complements the specific cultural landmarks with a broader perspective: the focus here is on the transition from hilly terrain to the mountain backdrop.
The Sagra dei maccheroni takes place in August and offers the chance to try locally made gastronomic specialties. The traditional specialty presented at the festival is Raccuja’s signature maccheroni: thread-like egg pasta with pork sauce and salted ricotta. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance; the date and program may change.
