Stromboli is the northernmost island of the Aeolian Archipelago. At Serro dei Vancori, the island rises to 924 metres above sea level. Stromboli is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Aeolian Islands. These are known for the formation and destruction of volcanic islands, as well as for ongoing volcanic activity. The volcanic landscape, nature conservation and coastline give your trip a clear thematic focus.

Nature Reserve and Volcanic Landscape

The “Riserva Naturale Isola di Stromboli e Strombolicchio” is designated as an oriented and integral nature reserve. It was established to protect Stromboli’s continuously active volcano, which has been active for at least two millennia. Rare or endemic plants such as Cytisus aeolicus, Genista ephedroides and Koekia saxicola grow in the reserve. Koekia saxicola is especially widespread on Strombolicchio.

The Sciara del Fuoco is also part of the volcanic landscape: it is a broad, north-west-facing depression into which ejected material flows. This description of the terrain adds a distinctive coastal feature to the view of the island’s ridge and elevation.

Hikes and Trails

With suitable equipment, good health and an authorised guide, visitors can hike to the summit at around 900 metres and observe the explosive activity of the craters from a safe distance. Guide requirements and summit access can change depending on volcanic conditions. For tourists, an official hiking map published in 2008 recommends three routes, each accompanied by a detailed technical information sheet. Check the current access conditions before setting out.

Coast and Beaches

Stromboli’s coastline is generally rocky, steep and rugged. There are only short stretches of dark beach on the northeastern side. Ficogrande Beach is a ten-minute walk from the hydrofoil landing; the bay consists of sand and volcanic rock.

Forgia Vecchia is a pristine beach with black pebbles smoothed by water and wind. Access is via a path from nearby Scari Beach, below San Vincenzo. Trail and path conditions can change. Another way to experience the coast is by boat from Scari to the Sciara del Fuoco at dusk. Availability and navigation restrictions may vary.

Culture and Island History

The INGV Stromboli Information Centre is located on Marina Garibaldi, about a five-minute walk from Stromboli port. During public opening hours, the Sala Visitatori provides information about active volcanoes, basic volcanology and the geology of places visited by hikers.

The Museo del Cinema di Stromboli is devoted to “Stromboli negli archivi dell'Istituto Luce” from 1930. Malvasia is also part of the island’s history: Stromboli was known for its renowned Malvasia production. Historically, pilgrims stopped over on Stromboli each year. Most then went on an excursion to the crater area and the mountain summit.

Plan Your Journey

Ginostra can only be reached by sea. In summer, Stromboli can be reached from the ports of Naples, Reggio Calabria, Milazzo, Messina, Palermo, Cefalù, Tropea and Vibo Marina. Seasonal services and timetables may change. Check the available crossings before travelling.
