Pianoconte Between Trails and History
Accommodation in Pianoconte
Pianoconte brings together themes that can shape your choice of where to stay: trails, distinctive landscapes, and prehistoric sites. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to consider the focus of your travel plans – whether you are more interested in connections to the town of Lipari, routes towards Quattropani, or the history of the plateau.
Road connections and routes to Quattropani
The scenic road that runs along the entire island connects Pianoconte with the town of Lipari. The Municipality of Lipari lists a trekking route that runs from Lipari via Pianoconte and Terme San Calogero to Quattropani. A tourist route runs from Lipari via Pianoconte and continues towards Quattropani. The descriptions emphasize different details: the municipal route explicitly names Terme San Calogero as a stop along the way, while the tourist route describes the onward direction to Quattropani. This makes it possible to distinguish the sequence of places on the trekking route from the directional description of the tourist route.
Landmarks along the routes
A narrow road descends from the junction towards Ospedale to the Cave di Caolino; this section lies beyond the Pianoconte–Quattropani road. The junction and descent are useful landmarks when planning your route. One route passes through narrow valleys to Bagno Secco, a former lake that has since dried up. The description of this landscape destination includes both the course through the valleys and the former lake’s current state. This distinguishes the route to Bagno Secco from the directions to the Cave di Caolino: there, the focus is on the descent to the kaolin quarries, while here it is on the sequence of narrow valleys leading to the former lake.
A short descent on the way to Timpone Pataso leads to a fumarole field. The directions to Timpone Pataso begin at a bus stop on the Pianoconte–Quattropani road; from there, an asphalt road leads towards the kaolin quarries. The two descriptions provide different landmarks for planning: a fumarole field at the end of the short descent and a stretch of paved road towards the kaolin quarries. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The plateau as a cultural and historical highlight
The extensive plateau of Pianoconte is dotted with farmhouses. Prehistoric sites dating from the Late Neolithic and the early phases of the Metal Ages have been discovered there. The dates therefore encompass both the Late Neolithic and the early phases of the Metal Ages. Unlike the route descriptions, which name specific sequences of places or landscape destinations, the sites point to a different aspect of travel: the prehistoric history of the plateau. If you would like to include cultural themes in your plans, you can consider this focus alongside the routes.
A dated experience in the fields
At the “Tramonti di Eolo” event offered by Azienda Agricola Mandarano in Pianoconte from April 26 to July 15, 2025, a path about 800 metres long ran through fields of grain and capers. Unlike the routes through valleys or to the fumarole field, this experience focused on a path through agricultural fields. If you are considering taking part today, check availability in advance.
