Reitano can be explored through a range of cultural landmarks: churches with their own historical connections, a medieval monument, fountains, a historic residence with stone masonry, and an artwork on the waterfront promenade. For the churches, these include their architectural history, links to a monastery, and former furnishings; for the fountains, they include their materials, former use, and date. The artwork adds another point of interest through its creator, year of creation, and connection to the Fiumara d’Arte park. If you’re looking for a hotel in Reitano, this overview can help you choose the cultural focus of your trip according to your interests.

Churches and their history

The Chiesa Madre “Madonna Immacolata” has medieval origins and houses the Cappella di Sant’Erasmo. The Chiesa della Madonna del Carmelo is considered Reitano’s oldest church and belonged to a Carmelite monastery. Various 17th-century paintings were part of its furnishings. The churches therefore have distinct points of historical interest: the Chiesa Madre is notable for its medieval origins and the chapel inside the church, while the Madonna del Carmelo is notable as the oldest church, its connection to the monastery, and its former furnishings.

The entrances also offer different points of orientation: the Chiesa Madre’s main entrance is on the town’s piazza. The Chiesa della Madonna del Carmelo is in a central area of Reitano; its main entrance opens onto a street that is easy to reach on foot.

Fountains, tower, and residence

The Torre di Guardia is a medieval monument that was part of the local defense system; today, it is a ruin. The Fontana del Serrone is made entirely of cut and hand-worked stone and was formerly used as a watering trough for animals. The Fontana del Carmine dates from the 18th century and has been restored; it is considered one of the most important attractions in Reitano’s historic center. The fountains have different points of interest: the Serrone is notable for its stonework and former use, while the Carmine is notable for its date, restoration, and role as an attraction in the historic center. Casa Gallo adds a historic residence, known for its stone masonry, to these landmarks. Alongside churches, the tower, and fountains, a residence thus offers another perspective on Reitano’s architectural history.

Art and chronology

The work “Monumento ad un poeta morto”, also known as “Finestra sul mare”, dates from 1989 and was created by the sculptor Tano Festa. Known as “La Finestra sul Mare”, it is an installation conceived by Festa for the Fiumara d’Arte park. It was installed on the waterfront promenade of Villa Margi in the municipality of Reitano. This work therefore brings together a named artist and year of creation with a specific location.

The cultural landmarks also span different periods: following the medieval origins of the Chiesa Madre are the 17th-century paintings, the 18th-century Fontana del Carmine, and Festa’s work from 1989. Architectural history, former furnishings, fountain restoration, and the artwork can thus be considered as distinct themes for your trip.
