Spadafora combines a long seafront promenade with churches, historic buildings and religious festivities. The promenade, also known as Lungomare Nauloco, stretches for about 4 km along the Tyrrhenian coast between Rometta Marea and Venetico.

Seafront promenade and outdoor activities

The Lungomare is a prominent landmark on Spadafora’s coastal side. Across from it is Parco Sportivo San Giuseppe, with outdoor exercise equipment and green spaces suitable for families and people who enjoy sports. This offers two distinct outdoor options: the coastal promenade and the sports park with its exercise equipment and green spaces.

The promenade has several accessible entrances. Local public transport stops are nearby. Public parking is available along Via Lungomare and on the surrounding streets. The promenade is free to use and has no time restrictions; check the current conditions before your visit.

Churches and their history

The Chiesa di San Giuseppe is a single-nave church with a polygonal apse, round arches, Corinthian columns and an elliptical ribbed dome. It brings together several architectural forms: the nave forms the main space, while the apse marks the end of the church. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe is accessible during religious services; check visiting arrangements in advance.

The Chiesa di San Martino is in the district of the same name and was rebuilt in the 1920s and 1930s. It preserves valuable polychrome marble altars from the 18th century, originating from the original church. Two periods are thus represented here: the 20th-century reconstruction and the 18th-century altars.

The Chiesa del Sacro Cuore di Gesù was built in 1939 by the engineer Barbaro from Messina. Above the high altar is a painting by Bonanno from Messina, dating from 1945. It commemorates the apparition associated with the church. In Grangiara stands the Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine, built in the early 19th century and retaining its original, simple and essential architectural features.

The castle and local festivities

The Castello di Spadafora is used by the municipal administration and the Pro Loco di Spadafora for numerous cultural events. Admission is free by request; confirm visiting arrangements in advance. The castle is therefore not only a historic landmark, but is also connected with events in the town.

The patron saint festivities in honour of Saint Joseph take place on the Sunday after the third Thursday in July and coincide with the traditional livestock fair. During the Processione di San Giuseppe, the statue is carried through Spadafora, turned towards the sea for the blessing, and then returned to the Chiesa di San Giuseppe. For your trip planning, two distinct perspectives are available: architecture at fixed locations and a festival programme featuring a procession, a blessing and a return to the church.

Grangiara as another point of interest

The Borgo di Grangiara is about 1,500 metres from the centre of Spadafora and can be reached on foot or by car. Grangiara’s agricultural produce includes olive oil, wine and citrus fruits, especially lemons. Together with the Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine, the district offers a distinct historical and agricultural point of interest for trip planning.
