Vulcano Piano is a large, horseshoe-shaped depression at an elevation of about 330 meters, open to the northwest. Its shape and orientation give the area a distinct landscape setting. In Piano, the endemic Aeolian broom grows at elevations between 350 and 400 meters above sea level. The figure of about 330 meters refers to the depression, while the range of 350 to 400 meters refers to the broom’s growing area. The terrain and the plant’s habitat are therefore two distinct, specific features of Vulcano Piano.

Plant Life and Landscape

The rare Aeolian broom, locally called “sgubbio,” was once used in construction. Endemic means that a species is restricted to a limited geographic area; the broom’s presence therefore gives Piano a distinctive botanical connection. Its local name and former use add a cultural and historical dimension to the description of its natural environment.

There are extensive rockrose stands in the Passo del Piano area; holm oak forests are also found near Piano. North of Vulcano Piano lies Capo Grillo, with extensive reforestation, mainly with pine and eucalyptus trees. These different plant and forest features are spread across several areas: rockrose characterizes the Passo del Piano area, holm oak forests are found near Piano, and the reforested areas are near northern Capo Grillo.

Trails, Craters, and History

A footpath leads north from Vulcano Piano to Capo Grillo; another path branches off from the road to Vulcano Piano and climbs up to the crater rims. One route description identifies its destination by a named place, while the other describes a climb to a landscape feature. This distinction is useful if you want to organize your outings by destination rather than distance.

Gran Cratere La Fossa was the site of Vulcano’s last historic eruption, which lasted from 1888 to 1890. The Church of the Holy Guardian Angels at Capo Grillo was built in the 1930s. These dates refer to different historical perspectives: 1888 to 1890 dates the eruption, while the 1930s date the construction of the church. The history of the volcano and the building history at Capo Grillo thus complement each other without referring to the same place or period.

Directions and Getting There

The road from Vulcano Piano leads to the southern side of the island and reaches the small village of Gelso. Gelso is known for its lighthouse and beach. It is a different destination from Capo Grillo in the north: Gelso lies on the southern side and is reached by road, while the footpath heads north. This contrast offers practical guidance for planning your trip around the island.

Scaffidi Bus runs year-round from Porto di Levante to Piano and Capo Grillo. Check the published timetable before traveling.
