The province of Lleida offers a range of reasons to travel: observing nature, walking trails, Romanesque churches, and experiences related to astronomy and geology. Its landscapes also vary considerably. The destinations described include an agricultural dryland area, mountain landscapes, and a reservoir. You can therefore shape your stay around the themes that interest you most.

Nature and trails across different landscapes

The Mas de Melons nature reserve is a 1,431-hectare agricultural dryland area in the Secans of the Lleida plain. It is home to Catalonia’s largest population of sandgrouse, as well as other steppe birds. Eleven routes have been established in the dryland ZEPA (Special Protection Area for Birds) of the Plana de Lleida. They can be completed by car, bicycle, or on foot. This gives you several ways to get around the area, whose landscape is defined by its dry, agricultural character.

A visit to Estany d’Ivars Vila-sana offers a different experience: an approximately 2.6-kilometre nature trail is suitable for walking and cycling. Along the route are bird hides, viewpoints, rest areas, and information panels; wooden boardwalks also cross the area. Discovery visits can explore the area in general or focus specifically on water, landscape and history, or birds. The province of Lleida offers a wide range of opportunities for birdwatching and rural tourism.

Those who prefer mountain landscapes and longer trails will find an extensive network of paths in AigĂĽestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. Hiking and excursions are generally permitted there; however, mountain conditions can vary depending on the season. Camins Vius circles the national park via the surrounding villages and restores historic paths through the valleys. This connects hiking with the history of the trails without limiting excursions to a single type of landscape. Wheelchair-accessible wooden boardwalks can be found at Planell de AigĂĽestortes and around Lake Sant Maurici. Check the seasonal conditions for this infrastructure before travelling.

Buses run from Lleida towards Esterri d’Àneu and Vielha, providing access to the national park area. Availability and timetables vary by season and should be checked before travelling. The Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees landscapes of the province are popular with winter sports enthusiasts. Comparing these themes can help with planning your trip: nature reserves, mountain trails, and winter sports offer different focal points.

Romanesque churches and stargazing

The Romanesque ensemble of Vall de BoĂ includes Sant Climent and Santa Maria de TaĂĽll, Sant Joan de BoĂ, Santa EulĂ lia de Erill la Vall, Sant Feliu de Barruera, La Nativitat and Sant Quirc de Durro, as well as Santa Maria de Cardet and La AssumpciĂł de CĂłll. All the churches can be visited, with the exception of Sant Quirc de Durro and La AssumpciĂł de CĂłll; check opening arrangements before travelling. At Sant Climent de TaĂĽll, a modern mapping projection reconstructs the original frescoes in the apse. This allows you to combine a look at Romanesque architecture with a digital representation of its earlier decoration.

At Montsec Astronomical Park, an interactive permanent exhibition introduces astronomy and space science. L’Ull del Montsec features a digital planetarium with a 3D Full Dome projection system. It can show today’s sky as well as the skies of past eras. For direct observation of the sky, the dome and its front wall can be opened completely. The park offers daytime and nighttime nature activities for universities, schools, families, and astronomy enthusiasts. In this way, the exhibition, planetarium, and direct observation offer different ways to explore the sky.

Geology, starry skies and regional cuisine

The Orígens Geopark in Lleida has been designated a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2018 and has received Starlight recognition for its particularly clear night skies. Its geological history also shapes the experience of visiting: the area of Conca de Tremp and Coll de Nargó is considered Europe’s most important dinosaur egg site and one of the most important in the world. Mont-Rebei Gorge is one of the Geopark’s most photogenic places. An impressive path carved into the rock runs through it; the cliffs rise up to 500 metres above the river. These themes range from the history of the Earth to striking landforms.

The Lleida wine route offers another perspective. It passes through municipalities where wines bearing the DO Costers del Segre designation of origin are produced, and extends from Pallars Sobirà to the fields of Segrià and Les Garrigues. Noguera, Urgell, and Pla d’Urgell are also part of the route. It is divided into eight sub-areas. Alongside the nature, culture, and geology themes, it offers its own way to explore the province’s diversity.
