When choosing a destination for your stay, it is worth looking at two different sides of Gausac: the architecture of Sant Martí de Gausac and the routes that pass through the village or lead from it into the surrounding landscape. The old town is characterised by small, interwoven streets that climb uphill. There are also distinctive landscapes and seasonal attractions. The routes differ in whether they pass through Gausac or begin there.

Sant Martí de Gausac: Gothic architecture and Romanesque details

Sant Martí de Gausac is considered one of the finest examples of Aranese Gothic architecture. At the same time, the church contains Romanesque details that can be distinguished from one another. The cylindrical Romanesque baptismal font features carved iconography, linking it to the baptismal fonts of Casau and Escunhau. This comparison therefore concerns a specific iconographic programme and two other baptismal fonts.

A Romanesque holy water font is located inside, next to the exit door. Its plant decoration consists of stems and leaves. Another detail is found at the entrance: a carved Christ figure is set into the wall of the narthex. It may have come from a tympanum of the former Romanesque church. The Gothic classification of the church and the Romanesque dating of the two fonts refer to different aspects.

Streets and routes around Gausac

The Paseo de contrastes por Vielha route passes through Vielha, Vilac, the Pònt de Beussa and Gausac before returning to Vielha. It passes through the village, following steep streets that offer mountain panoramas. Gausac is therefore one section of this route through several villages.

The Ruta Bosque de Baricauba, by contrast, starts in Gausac and climbs on a paved track to the forest of Montcorbison, known as Baricauba. A small road also leads from Gausac to the lushly wooded Baricauba forest. Before setting out, it is advisable to check trail and road conditions, as they can change with the seasons.

The Gausac-Casau-Vielha walking route leads to the Font de Santa Maria. Walkers can drink and freshen up there; the condition of the spring may vary seasonally. This provides several specific landmarks for getting your bearings: a route through steep streets, a starting point for a walk towards the forest, and a walking route with a named spring as its destination.

Scenery and seasonal impressions

There are lovely views of the Vielha Pass from Gausac. Horses graze in the meadows around the village, although this scene may vary depending on the season. The surroundings can be experienced not only along the routes, but also through the landscapes around Gausac.

During the summer months, Gausac has municipal swimming pools in a natural setting with lovely views. As this is a seasonal offering, check before your trip whether the pools will be open during your stay.

During the Hèsta Major de Gausac, a procession takes place on 16 August from Sant Martin to the main square. If you are planning your trip around this event, check the dates for the relevant year.
