Belianes: Discover its culture and olive oil heritage
Accommodation in Belianes
Belianes brings together architectural history and agriculture, particularly the production of olive oil. Two time scales can help you plan your trip: the buildings point to different centuries, while the festivals have specific dates on the calendar. You can therefore plan your stay around a cultural focus or a festival date.
Architecture between Gothic and Renaissance
The Ajuntament de Belianes is a Gothic civic building with Renaissance influences from the 16th and 18th centuries. It was declared a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional (National Cultural Asset of Interest) in 1979. The present-day Església de Sant Jaume was begun in 1563 and is a Late Gothic building. This makes it possible to distinguish between different architectural styles and dates.
Cal Roc is a 16th-century Catalan Renaissance-style manor house in private ownership. Compared with the Gothic civic building, the Ajuntament, and the Late Gothic Església, it represents a different building type and stylistic association. Civic building, church and manor house refer to different types of buildings; Gothic and Renaissance describe architectural features.
Olive oil and rural life
The Molà d’oli Maurici Massot illustrates the agricultural focus on olive processing. The restored oil mill dates from the 17th century and was restored in 1998. Its original machinery, used to grind and press olives, has been preserved. Its function can be understood through these two stages of oil production.
The Ecomuseu collection includes tools and equipment used in rural life, as well as clothing and documents of great historical and cultural interest. In contrast to the mill machinery, the focus here is on work tools, clothing and written records. The two perspectives are clearly distinct: the technical processing of olives on the one hand, and rural life on the other.
The guided tour on the history of oil and agriculture combines a visit to the Molà d’oli Maurici Massot with the Ecomuseu. This tour requires an appointment in advance; before your trip, check whether your preferred date can be arranged.
Festivals throughout the year and a designated natural area
There are two different points of reference for planning throughout the year: the Festa Major takes place in July, with specific dates that change from year to year; the Festa de l’Oli is part of Belianes’s tradition and is celebrated on the first Sunday in December. If one of these festivals is the reason for your trip, check your planned stay against the dates for that year.
The Patge reial involves a visit by the royal page; it usually takes place on the Sunday before New Year’s Day. The specific programme may vary. When planning, check both the date and the programme for that year.
The natural area Secans de Belianes-Preixana is also a point of reference: it is designated as a ZEPA, or Special Protection Area for birds, and extends partly into Belianes. Alongside architecture and the history of olive oil, this designated natural area offers another distinct focus.
