Alfés brings together the steppe landscape of Timoneda d’Alfés, historical connections in the old town and local culinary traditions. Three perspectives can help you plan your trip: the landscape and its species, routes with different itineraries, and architectural history and cuisine. This can help you decide whether nature, local history or both should be the focus of your stay.

Steppe landscape and species

Timoneda d’Alfés is considered one of the most authentic examples of the Ebro Basin’s steppe landscape in Catalonia. It is also home to the only population of Alosa becuda in Catalonia.

A notice dated December 30, 2025, described the information hut at the airfield as operational. It served as a visitor reception point and environmental education center for Timoneda d’Alfés. If you plan to use the hut as a starting point, check its current operating status in advance.

Routes with different itineraries

The Secans de Mas de Melons-Alfés route first passes through Timoneda d’Alfés, home to numerous threatened bird species. This long circular route can be completed in full by bicycle, car or on foot.

The Ruta del riu Set runs parallel to the Set River from one end of the municipality of Alfés to the other. It is part of the GR 3 long-distance trail, which crosses inland Catalonia. The two options are therefore a long circular route whose first section passes through Timoneda, and a riverside route running from one end of the municipality to the other.

Local history and architectural styles

La Vileta, in the old town, includes houses of Arab origin as well as a former Jewish quarter. Stars of David are depicted on its door lintels.

Sant Pere d’Alfés is one of the churches built in the counties of the province of Lleida in the late 13th or early 14th century; Romanesque features are still clearly visible in Alfés. The single-nave building has a pointed barrel vault and a semicircular apse. Beneath the apse’s eaves, five corbels feature carved decorations in the Toulouse tradition.

The guided route at Aeròdrom Militar d’Alfés includes above-ground anti-aircraft positions with gun emplacements and trenches. It also covers logistical facilities at the former airfield, including a water tank and an armored fuel store, as well as the former powder magazine.

Local culinary traditions

Orelletes are considered the most typical and traditional dessert of Alfés and the surrounding area; in Alfés, they are usually eaten at major celebrations. Catxipanda is one of the notable dishes of the cuisine of Alfés and the comarca.
