Torrefarrera
Accommodation in Torrefarrera
In Torrefarrera, attractions range from neoclassical architecture and medieval traces in sandstone to a cycling track and the landscape around the PantĂ de Serrallarga. When planning your visit, you can decide whether you are more interested in architectural history, nature or a sports facility.
History and architecture
The Església Parroquial de la Santa Creu was built in the mid-18th century in the neoclassical style and is considered the only church in this style in Segrià . Its lower section features a wall of Muslim construction. A silo carved into the sandstone was also discovered beside the church and is probably of Muslim origin. The two sandstone features therefore differ in location: the wall forms part of the lower section of the church, while the silo is beside it.
El Convent o Edifici de l’ensenyança dates from 1799 and was designed by the architect Agapit Lamarca. It is located about 500 metres south of the town centre, in the direction of Lleida. Until the Civil War, the building served as a school for all the children of Torrefarrera; it was also used by a community of cloistered nuns of the Order of l’Estonnac. Its construction date, architect and former use give this building a different historical point of reference from the Santa Creu church.
Sandstone traces and medieval connections
La Grallera preserves evidence of medieval agricultural structures in a sandstone block measuring about 100 square metres. Its architectural details include a clearly visible cistern opening with an overflow, a door and steps carved into the stone. The Torre Grallera is documented at this site from 1150. In 1192, the existence of houses there is mentioned as “in castellum et villam que vocatur Gralleram in Segriano”.
Another historical connection leads to Tossal de la Pleta: the former castle, known as Castellblanc de Llitera, stood on its summit. In 1174, Count Ermengol VII of Urgell transferred it to Joan d’Albesa. The year refers to this transfer; it does not date the former castle itself.
Landscape and orientation
The PantĂ de Serrallarga is located in the Partida del SecĂ de Torrefarrera. Surrounded by cultivated fields, it forms its own ecosystem with birdlife and vegetation. Here, cultivated land lies alongside an area with its own bird and plant life.
The Plataner centenari, a large plane tree with a diameter of 3.78 metres, is in the Partida del MolĂ. It lies 400 metres along the CamĂ de Benavent. Another geographical feature is the Fita dels Quatre Termes: the boundary marker stands at the junction of the municipal areas of Torrefarrera, Malpartit, RossellĂł and Alpicat.
Cycling track, murals and route
The Torrefarrera Pump Track is a public cycling track covering 1,800 square metres, located on Avinguda Europa opposite Institut Joan SolĂ . It consists of two closed dirt circuits of different sizes and difficulty levels. The 1,800 square metres refers to the total area of the facility, while the differences in size and difficulty refer to the two circuits.
The Torrefarrera Street Art Festival is an annual mural festival. If the festival is a reason for your trip, check the event dates before making plans. A route reaches the old centre of Torrefarrera and passes between the Santa Creu church and the town hall.
