Almatret can be explored through its hiking trails and the history of the town. The routes run along the Riba-roja Reservoir, through a valley and past former mining sites. Documents, buildings and local festivals also tell the story of the town’s development. If you are considering Almatret as a destination for a hotel stay, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.

Hiking between the reservoir, the valley and mining history

The Malacate – Mina del Tormo hiking trail from Almatret has been restored and signposted. It runs along the Riba-roja Reservoir and passes a floating island for waterbirds. The route also includes the preserved Malacate ramp: the remains of a machine once used to raise and lower coal wagons. The trail thus combines a feature of the landscape with a visible remnant of mining history.

The Almatret – Cingle de la Pena hiking trail offers a different perspective. It starts in the town and leads to the Mina de l'Espanyola and the Cingle de la Pena viewpoint above the Ebro. Along the way, it follows an old trench from the Spanish Civil War. Stage 36 from Mequinenza to Almatret reaches the town after crossing the Barranco de Aiguamoll and the Mas de Gili valley. It passes the abandoned Lluc mines, where remains of basic mining structures have been preserved. The trails therefore offer different points of focus: the reservoir and waterbirds, views and history, or the valley and mining remains. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

Els Tossals d’Almatret is part of Catalonia’s PEIN protected-area system, established in 1992, and of Catalonia’s proposal for the Natura 2000 network. This is another point of interest for travelers who want to take the region’s designated protected areas into account, alongside the individual features of the trails.

Local history in documents and buildings

An important historical reference is the Carta de PoblaciĂł of 1301. Written in a medieval context, the document is in the ecclesiastical Latin of the time and is considered the foundation of the town in its present form. The Antiga presĂł del poble is also associated with a specific event: the death of Francesc Montcada i de Cardona, the first Marquis of Aitona, in 1594.

The architectural heritage spans different periods and styles. The parish church of Sant Miquel is an 18th-century Baroque church; its portal is framed by two columns with composite capitals. The Creu de Terme d'Almatret is a Gothic wayside cross dating from 1608. La Font, meanwhile, is a sculptural ensemble by Tamarit with a basin made by local stonemason Antonio Mur. It was inaugurated in 1971 to celebrate the arrival of running water in 1963.

Older infrastructure is also part of the town’s history: El Pou de la Vila is a stone well mentioned in Almatret’s ordinances as early as 1558. It has a wide stone staircase and eleven surviving stone washbasins. Plaça Major is the town center, where most of the streets converge; it is a good place to start a visit to Almatret. Together, these places offer different starting points for a tour through the town’s history, though they do not all date from the same period.

Festivals and travel planning

The main winter festival of Sant Blai takes place around February 3, on the nearest weekend, and is associated with Carnival. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the dates for the relevant travel year in advance. The autumn festival of Sant Miquel includes shared meals, a public dinner and other activities for children and adults; its program may vary.

When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether to focus on one of the hiking trails, the mining history or the architectural and documentary heritage. Plaça Major provides a point of reference for visiting the town. If you are planning a hotel stay in Almatret, you can use these themes as a starting point for organizing your interests for the trip.
