For your travel planning in Ivars D'urgell, you can choose from a range of highlights: birdwatching at the Estany d'Ivars i Vila-sana, a section of the CamĂ de Sant Jaume and the town's architectural and cultural history. A literary route and the Festa major de Sant Andreu are also among the themes you can plan your stay around.

Nature and trails at the lake

The Estany d'Ivars i Vila-sana is one of Catalonia's most significant wetlands for birdwatching. More than 210 species can be observed there over the course of a year. This figure refers to observations throughout the year; it does not mean that all the species can be seen at the same time. If birdwatching is important to your trip, timing is therefore one of the things to consider when planning.

A six-kilometre nature trail runs around the lake. Facilities along the trail include viewpoints, birdwatching hides, jetties, information boards, picnic areas and information points. This allows you to plan the circuit with stops for observing wildlife and a break. As facilities can change over time, check which ones are currently available before your visit.

The CamĂ de Sant Jaume from Anglesola to Palau d'Anglesola passes through Ivars D'urgell and the Estany. If you plan to walk this route, check the current route beforehand.

Churches and cultural history

The present-day Església de Sant Andreu was built between 1785 and 1790 on the site of the former Romanesque church. It has three naves: the central nave is covered by a groin vault with lunettes, while the side naves have groin vaults. The different types of vault give the three-nave building a clearly articulated architectural structure.

The Ermita de la Mare de Déu d'Horta has a different layout: its present building dates from the second half of the 17th century and has a single-nave hall. The complex also includes an apse with a large shell-shaped vault and an octagonal bell tower attached to the façade. Compared with the three naves of Sant Andreu, the single-nave layout is a specific architectural difference between the two religious buildings.

The history of religious gatherings is also connected with the town. At the 1825 procession of the Mare de Déu de l'Horta, worshippers from more than forty places in the comarca gathered. This is a historical reference, not a statement about the size of present-day events.

Another cultural point of interest is the Ruta literaria Maria-Mercè Marçal, which opened in Ivars D'urgell in 2021. Together with the architectural history of the churches, it broadens the scope beyond a visit to the lake. The Festa major de Sant Andreu is celebrated on 30 November; most of the festivities take place the following weekend. As the programme can vary, check the dates of the celebrations for your trip.
