Ciutadilla brings together buildings from different periods: a medieval castle, the Convent del Roser with Renaissance and late Gothic elements, the parish church of Sant Miquel, and Casa Valls with restored agricultural spaces. These sights offer different insights into the architectural and local history. The hermitage of Sant Roc also adds a religious tradition with a connection to the landscape around Ciutadilla.

The Castle, Convent and Parish Church

Ciutadilla Castle originated as a medieval fortress in the 11th century. At the end of the 16th century, it was rebuilt and transformed into a residential palace. Its seven-storey keep, Renaissance windows with Gothic influences, and panoramic views of the surrounding area make both its architecture and location defining aspects of the castle. The change from fortress to residential palace marks a later phase in its history.

The Convent del Roser displays a different architectural combination. Gispert de Guimerà founded it in 1582; it is designed in the Renaissance style with late Gothic elements. Notable details include the church’s rose window, the bell tower, gargoyles and a pulpit with heraldic motifs. The surviving remains also reveal the church’s layout and some exterior structures connected to the monastic rooms and courtyard. Decorative details thus sit alongside the discernible layout of the complex.

The parish church of Sant Miquel dates from the 17th century. It stands near the highest point of Ciutadilla, at the foot of the castle. The church contains a Gothic sarcophagus with a reclining statue that belonged to the GuimerĂ  family. The castle and church are thus described in relation to different points in the town, while the sarcophagus adds another chapter to its religious and family history.

Casa Valls and Rural Life

Casa Valls features restored agricultural spaces: oil and wine presses, grain stores, a cellar, a stable and a pantry. Each space represents a different aspect of agricultural life, from processing to storage. The Espai de la Vida Rural at Casa Valls also serves as a gallery for works by artists who live in the Vall del Corb. Casa Valls therefore brings together insights into agricultural spaces and art by people from the valley. Admission to Casa Valls is free; check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Sant Roc and the Hiking Trail

The Sant Roc hermitage stands on the Sant Roc plains, 3 km from Ciutadilla and at an altitude of 628 metres. It was built in gratitude after the cholera epidemic of 1720. On Easter Monday, the people of Ciutadilla make a pilgrimage to the hermitage. Its architectural history, location and recurring pilgrimage tradition are closely linked to the name Sant Roc, giving the site its own religious significance alongside the buildings in the town centre.

Hiking is also among the activities mentioned for the area: the local SL La Bovera i el Riu Corb trail is associated with the municipal areas of Ciutadilla and GuimerĂ . Interest in Ciutadilla therefore encompasses both its architectural and cultural heritage and a regional hiking trail option. For a history-focused stay, the castle, Convent del Roser, Sant Miquel and Casa Valls offer different subjects; Sant Roc complements them with its location and Easter Monday pilgrimage tradition.
