Organyà brings together literary heritage, landscapes and a range of outdoor activities. The Homilies d’Organyà are considered the oldest known literary text in Catalan. The town also has a collegiate church, places associated with the Homilies, routes on Santa Fe and events held on set dates. When planning a stay, you can organise these themes around culture, landscapes and specific travel dates.

The Homilies d’Organyà and Santa Maria

The Sala de les Homilies in Organyà houses a permanent exhibition featuring a facsimile of the Homilies d’Organyà. The Monolith of the Homilies d’Organyà stands in Plaça de les Homilies; the Camins de les Homilies d’Organyà route in Organyà also leads to the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria. The exhibition, monument and route each offer a distinct connection to the town’s literary heritage.

Santa Maria d’Organyà is designated a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional (BCIN), or Asset of National Cultural Interest. Its semicircular apse is decorated with a frieze of paired arches between pilaster strips. An apse is the semicircular part of a church, while pilaster strips are flat, vertical projections on a wall. This makes the architectural description easier to understand without specialist vocabulary.

The historic road from Tresponts connected the Urgellet plain with Organyà and passed through the Tresponts gorge. Thus, alongside its literary heritage, the town’s history also includes an earlier route connecting different landscapes.

Landscapes, routes and activities

The Segre River forms the eastern boundary of the municipality of Organyà. To the west, the town is dominated by Mount Santa Fe, which reaches an elevation of 1,207 m. The river and mountain therefore provide two distinct geographical reference points. From the summit of the Santa Fe route, there are sweeping panoramic views over the Vall de Cabó and the Vall del Segre.

The Santa Fe Vertical route is well marked from its starting point at Plaça de les Homilies to the end of the Vertical. The Organyà hiking route to the Basses de Fontanet follows a different type of trail: from its starting point at Plaça de les Homilies, it first follows a wide, vehicle-accessible track to the Fontanet River. From there, a path marked with yellow signs leads to the Basses de Fontanet.

The Basses de Fontanet are used as a swimming area in summer. Mount Cogulló is considered a suitable place for paragliding. So, alongside panoramic views and the marked Vertical route, outdoor options include a route that switches from track to path, summer swimming and paragliding.

Events throughout the year

The Festa i Fira del Llibre del Pirineu is held in Organyà every year on the first Saturday in September. The Fira de Sant Andreu takes place on the last weekend of November. The two dates mark different points in the seasonal calendar. If one of these events is a deciding factor for your trip, check its specific date before making plans.
