When looking for hotels in Araós, local attractions can help guide your travel planning: Sant Esteve d’Araós stands in the village centre, while the remains of La força d’Araós lie to the west. Also nearby are the growing and themed garden of Herbes de l’Alt Pirineu and natural areas in the surrounding region. Church architecture, archaeological traces and a pre-arranged plant visit each offer a different focus.

Sant Esteve d’Araós and its architecture

Sant Esteve d’Araós is located in the centre of Araós and is considered an early medieval structure because of its architecture. A particularly original medieval feature is the semicircular apse with two splayed windows. The central window has a lintel, while the southern one has an arch. Thus, both the positions of the openings and their upper finishes differ: a lintel closes an opening with a straight edge, while an arch gives the top a curved shape. If you are interested in early medieval architectural forms, the apse offers a specific detail to focus on.

La força d’Araós: fortification and residential remains

La força d’Araós reveals a different trace of history. West of Araós, near the chapel of Sant Francesc in Vall Ferrera, lie the remains of a fortification and several medieval houses. At the castle site, a wall fragment about three metres long and a ditch that partially encircles the hilltop have been preserved. The wall fragment and the ditch differ in form: one is a limited remnant of a structure, while the other follows a course that only partially surrounds the summit. The upper branch of the path from Araós leads to the castle summit. Check the trail conditions locally before setting out.

Herb garden and plant visits

The growing and themed garden of Herbes de l’Alt Pirineu lies below the Ermita de San Francisco de Araós in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, at an elevation of 950 metres. At the growing site, you can discover more than 80 varieties of aromatic and medicinal plants. You must get in touch in advance to arrange a date and time for your visit. Plan the garden as an appointment, and ask about the current visiting arrangements when you do.

The Agrobotiga Herbes de l’Alt Pirineu is located at Carrer únic 35, 25573 Araós. Its range includes aromatic herbs for seasoning food, infusions, natural cosmetics, dried flowers and plants, and seeds. As the product range may change, ask in advance about any specific item.

Forest and recreation area nearby

Bosc de Virós is a particularly interesting forest area in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park. The Bordes de Virós recreation area is also near Araós. The park description, updated in 2013, lists three picnic tables, two springs, a barbecue and an information board there. If your plans depend on specific facilities, it is advisable to check their current status before your visit.

Date of the Festa Major

The Festa Major d’Araós is celebrated for Sant Lliser on 1 September or on the first Saturday in September. If the festival is a key reason for your trip, check the event dates for the year you plan to visit.
