Discover Sondrio: Mountain Culture, Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Sondrio
In Sondrio, museums, historic sites and an archaeological trail offer insights into cultural history; the province provides a natural perspective, with protected areas, valleys and alpine landscapes. This lets you plan city visits and activities across the wider area as different focuses of your stay.
Landscapes and protected areas of the province
A large part of the province of Sondrio lies at elevations above 2,000 metres. At lower elevations, alpine meadows, scree slopes and extensive glaciers follow meadows and coniferous forests. The protected areas include one national park, one regional park, seven regional nature reserves, two natural monuments, three local parks of supra-municipal interest and numerous Natura 2000 sites. These include the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio and the Parco Regionale delle Orobie Valtellinesi.
In the province’s protected landscapes, you can spot deer, ibex and chamois; with a little luck, you may also see bearded vultures and golden eagles. The Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi encompasses fourteen valleys. Its trails range from flat routes to steep, challenging paths—a wide range to bear in mind when choosing a hike.
Mountain culture and history in Sondrio
At Castello Masegra, the CAST museum tells the story of mountain culture. Its themes include climbing, mountaineering and the environment. Also at Castello Masegra, the MuMiVV displays mineral collections from Valtellina and Valchiavenna. These two offerings provide different ways to explore the mountains: one through human experiences and the environment, the other through the mineral collections of the two regions.
A Renaissance camera picta at Castello Masegra features a fresco cycle depicting Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso. Another place to explore art and regional history is the MVSA in Palazzo Sassi de'Lavizzari. Its six departments are devoted to the history and artistic expression of the whole of Valtellina. The museum offers workshops and creative activities for children, guided tours for adults, and special programs for people with disabilities. The building is wheelchair accessible and fully accessible.
Historic details also shape the cityscape beyond the museums. Scarpatetti is an old rural quarter with country houses, characteristic wooden balconies and stone “involt”. On the climb through the quarter to Castello Masegra, three small Marian chapels bear witness to popular devotion. On the historic Piazza Quadrivio, Palazzo Sertoli is part of an architecturally and artistically significant complex of three interconnected palaces. On the outskirts of Sondrio, the Santuario della Madonna della Sassella stands on a rocky outcrop. This 15th-century sanctuary features frescoes attributed to Andrea de Passeris and dated to 1511.
Trails, nature and activities
For a nature outing near Sondrio, consider the Bosco dei Bordighi: the nature reserve stretches along the Adda and can be reached on foot or by bike via the Sentiero Valtellina in the direction of Tirano. The trails are mostly flat, equipped and marked. The area preserves one of the few remaining floodplain forests on the Adda floodplain. Near Sondrio, the Sentiero Valtellina is well equipped and has many rest areas; almost the entire route there follows dedicated cycle paths.
For longer routes, two trails can be distinguished by their length and direction. The Via dei Terrazzamenti is a 70-kilometre walking trail between Morbegno and Tirano that can be followed from Sondrio in either direction. In total, 40 rest areas are spaced along the route. The Sentiero Valtellina, by contrast, is a 114-kilometre cycling and walking trail from Colico to Bormio along the Adda. A trail with a cultural focus is the Sentiero dei ricordi: it starts at the Museo Valtellinese di Storia e Arte and leads to important archaeological sites and rock art sites in the municipality of Sondrio.
Activities on the water are also available on the Adda: rafting, kayaking and hydrospeed are possible between Piateda and Castione Andevenno. This section is also suitable for less experienced participants. The activities described therefore range from cultural visits and trails within the city to hiking, cycling and water activities across the wider province.
