Several themes can shape a stay in Prosto: architectural and art history, Ice Age landforms, cycling and walking routes, and Biscottini di Prosto. The Chiesa di Maria Assunta is in the village; Palazzo Vertemate Franchi is on the northern edge of Prosto, set apart opposite the historic village of Piuro. There are also natural sites nearby and in the area between Prosto di Piuro and Chiavenna. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose different points of focus depending on your interests.

Ice Age Landscape and Waterfalls

Nearby, in Borgonuovo di Piuro, are the twin waterfalls of Cascate dell’Acquafraggia. They are officially designated a natural monument by the Regione Lombardia. The Marmitte dei Giganti offer a different landscape feature: their nature reserve extends between the area of Prosto di Piuro and Chiavenna. The park is an exceptional example of geological phenomena from the Ice Age.

These two natural attractions are clearly distinct: the Cascate dell’Acquafraggia are notable for their twin waterfalls and their designation as a natural monument, while the Marmitte dei Giganti are distinguished by their Ice Age landforms and the extent of the reserve. If you are weighing culture against landscape when planning your trip, these offer two clearly different points of interest.

Architectural History and Art

Since 1988, Palazzo Vertemate Franchi has been the Casa Museo of the Comune di Chiavenna. Its historic gardens preserve the original connection between the Renaissance residence, its landscape and agricultural activity. The paintings inside are inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Together, the residence, gardens and artistic themes offer different insights into the history and design of the palazzo.

The Chiesa di Maria Assunta is a Baroque church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. In Prosto, it stands beyond the main village, across a 17th-century bridge. Its bell tower was built in the first decades of the 17th century. The church contains paintings attributed to the school of Simon Vouet. It is worth distinguishing between the artistic references: the paintings in the palazzo are inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, while the church’s works are attributed to an artists’ school.

Routes and Cycling

In Prosto, a combined cycling and walking path passes a glacial pothole and continues towards the crotti of Poiatengo and the centre of Chiavenna. The “Storie e sapori di Piuro” route reaches Prosto’s church square on foot, by bicycle via the combined cycling and walking path, or by car.

For cyclists, the municipality of Piuro has paved sections of the Ciclabile Valchiavenna and various unpaved routes. This gives you a choice ranging from a route with a specific course through Prosto to different types of routes in the wider municipal area. The routes can therefore be distinguished by their described course and—on the cycling routes in Piuro—by their surface.

Biscottini di Prosto

The Biscottini di Prosto combine a particular method of preparation with a family tradition upheld over generations. They are kneaded, shaped, cut and packaged by hand. In the village area near the church, sisters Monica and Simonetta Del Curto continue the traditional recipe. It is considered an old family tradition, handed down through generations in Valchiavenna. The handmade process therefore involves several steps—from kneading to packaging—while the recipe’s transmission connects it to local family history.
