Discover Civo: Churches, Art and Mountain Hiking
Accommodation in Civo
Civo has four parishes and numerous churches of particular artistic value. Several cultural themes can shape your travel plans: architectural history, paintings and frescoes, individual architectural details, or the connection between the townscape and the landscape. There is also a challenging hike along the circular route to Bivacco Bottani Cornaggia. Civo can therefore be explored through a wide variety of interests.
Churches, Art and Architectural History
The Church of Sant'Andrea in Civo was built toward the end of the 15th century, later altered, and today presents a Baroque style. From the church, you can reach the 17th-century Oratorio dell'Immacolata. Together, the two buildings represent different stages in the local history of sacred architecture: on the one hand, a late-medieval church that was later altered; on the other, an oratory from the following century.
In Caspano, the Baroque Church of San Bartolomeo was built between 1730 and 1738 by masters from Ticino. It preserves works by Giacomo Parravicini, known as Gianolo. Its second chapel contains a depiction of the Resurrection of Lazarus by Luigi Donati, dating from 1508. This artwork predates the construction of the church by a considerable margin, so the building and painting offer different historical points of reference. The Oratorio di Sant'Andrea is another place with its own artistic history: it has been restored and contains paintings by Lombard masters from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Smaller buildings and individual artworks also contribute to the picture. In the center of Civo, a 15th-century votive fresco depicting the Trinity can be found on an old house. East of Civo stands the Chiesetta di S. Bernardo in a scenic location. Its exposed stone walls have a simple, austere character. The Oratorio dei 7 Fratelli is located at an altitude of 2,000 meters; it has been restored and preserves traces of 16th-century frescoes. These examples differ in their location, design, and historical context.
A single-nave church with six chapels houses paintings and frescoes by Pietro Bianchi of Como, as well as stucco statues by Agostino Silva. A church square is lined with 14 chapels depicting the Stations of the Cross, built in 1756. The Palazzo Parravicini, known as “del Podestà ,” is another landmark for appreciating the architecture: it stands at the western entrance to the Borgo and has a large 16th-century colonnade inside. In Caspano, old noble palaces are now dilapidated and used for agricultural purposes.
The architectural heritage includes more than churches and palaces. Fountains and washhouses stand along roads and connecting routes between the different hamlets; other fountains are located in village centers, often in the main square. They once served as meeting places for residents. This historical use gives the fountains a different significance from the paintings, frescoes, and architectural features of individual religious buildings.
Hiking and Views
The “Anello del Bivacco Bottani” circular route starts in Poira di Dentro and passes across the plateau of Alpe Visogno on its way to Bivacco Bottani Cornaggia. Described as a challenging hike, it covers 11.3 kilometers, with about 1,281 meters of elevation gain and a stated walking time of 5 hours and 55 minutes. These three figures offer different planning details: distance, ascent, and duration. The stated walking time makes clear that this hike takes up a substantial part of the day.
The Chapel of Santa Margherita near Poira di Civo, built in 2000, offers a different connection to the landscape. The meadow in front of the chapel affords views of the Orobic side, particularly Val Gerola. While the circular route is defined by its distance, elevation gain, and walking time, the view is the main focus here. These two themes offer different ways to weigh cultural visits and nature interests when choosing where to stay in Civo.
