If you are planning a trip to Tresivio, you can focus on three themes: historic buildings, archaeological traces and trails in the municipal area. The places and routes offer different highlights—from a religious tradition to a crossing of the Rhaetian slope. For your planning, it is worth considering these highlights separately.

Trails along the Rhaetian slope and to Alpe Rogneda

The Sentiero del Sole passes above Prasomaso through the municipal area of Tresivio. The network of trails allows you to cross the Rhaetian slope all the way between Sondrio and Tirano; the route runs mainly at elevations between 1,000 and 1,300 metres. The details about the crossing and elevation make this route distinct from the trail starting at Boirolo.

From Boirolo, an unpaved mule track leads to Alpe Rogneda and the municipal mountain huts at 2,200 metres. You can travel there on foot or by mountain bike; motorised traffic is prohibited. For this route, both the surface and the permitted types of use are important points to consider when planning. Check local access conditions before setting out.

The two trails can be clearly distinguished by their stated features: the Sentiero del Sole is a crossing between two places along the Rhaetian slope, while the mule track from Boirolo leads to specific destinations and has a clear traffic rule. If you plan to take one of the routes, take its particular course and purpose into account.

Sanctuary, churches and archaeological traces

The Santa Casa Lauretana Sanctuary was built between 1646 and 1790 as a votive offering following the plague of 1630. It houses an 18th-century replica of the Santa Casa of Nazareth. The replica stands in a large stucco-decorated display case and contains an image of the Black Madonna. The building’s history and the replica refer to different historical contexts: the plague of the 17th century and the replica made in the following century.

A seasonal schedule is listed for the sanctuary, with visiting hours from June to September: Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Check whether these hours are still in effect before your visit. The parish church of Santissimi Pietro e Paolo dates back to the 13th century and was later remodelled. It is open during Mass; plan your visit around the current Mass schedule and confirm the times in advance.

The Stele di Tresivio bears an inscription in the Raetic script and was found in Tresivio on 31 March 1851. It is considered one of the most archaeologically and historically significant finds in the entire Alpine region. Castello-Calvario di Tresivio is also part of the history of strategically located hilltop settlements that dominated Valtellina. In the Middle Ages, some of these settlements were repopulated, in part with towers or castles.

In the rural settlement centre of S. Antonio, traditional buildings offer a glimpse of the layout of a farmhouse: the ground floor housed the stables, the first floor the living quarters, and the attic the hayloft. The Chiesetta del Calvario, meanwhile, is the destination of a traditional Good Friday procession. It begins at the Santa Casa Sanctuary and follows a path with several stations and iron crosses.

The Calvario Rock and getting there

A separate path to the Chiesetta del Calvario starts at the ancient Piazza Fontana and leads to the top of the Calvario Rock in less than 15 minutes. From there, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama. The Good Friday procession and the path from Piazza Fontana serve different purposes: one is a religious tradition, while the other provides a short route to the viewpoint.

You can reach Tresivio by train via Sondrio or Ponte in Valtellina, and then continue by bus. Check the latest train and bus timetables before departure. If you are looking for a hotel in Tresivio, you can base your search on your planned visits and how you will get there—for example, on whether cultural sites, a route or public transport connections are a priority during your stay.
