Caspoggio: Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Caspoggio
Caspoggio offers hikes, a via ferrata, and cultural and historical trails to suit a range of travel interests. If you want to choose a hike based on how much time you have, the stated walking times, trail lengths, and elevation gains can help you compare them.
Hikes by Walking Time and Elevation Gain
The “I sentieri del latte a Caspoggio” route is about 3 kilometers long, with around 430 meters of elevation gain and a walking time of approximately 1.5 hours. At about 9 kilometers, with around 750 meters of elevation gain and a walking time of approximately 4 hours, “Lo sci a Caspoggio” is the longer of the two routes. Both are intended for hiking; with small variations, they can also be cycled. This makes it possible to compare them not only by walking time, but also by distance and elevation gain.
“I maggenghi di Caspoggio” links two destinations with different time and elevation figures: the ascent to Sant’Antonio is 200 meters, with a walking time of approximately 1.5 hours; to Motta, it is 350 meters, with a walking time of around 2.5 hours. The route leads from Sant’Antonio along the “Sentiero del Latte” to Motta di Caspoggio. A circular route via Prabello and Santa Elisabetta is a possible return route. Alpe Prabello is another destination for hiking and cycling. There is a picnic area with facilities next to the chapel.
Via Ferrata and Route Connections
The Ferrata Vigneron is a challenging, vertical, exposed via ferrata without any particular technical difficulties. Long vertical slabs are extensively equipped with metal rungs and a taut cable. The start is near the hamlet of Castello in the municipality of Caspoggio. Parking is available near the roundabout on the provincial road through Valmalenco, at the turnoff for Caspoggio.
A stage of the Alta Via della Valmalenco can also lead to Caspoggio: you can descend to Caspoggio via the former ski slopes. You can then take public transport back to Torre di Santa Maria. The slopes’ former use is part of the route as described.
Local History and Architecture
The ruins of the ancient Castello di Caspoggio can be seen in the forests of Castello in Caspoggio. The “Una storia in cammino” route includes a trail to Castello di Caspoggio. If you are interested in a cultural walk around town, “Erminio Dioli pittore” is a circular route along streets through the center of Caspoggio.
The medieval “Truna” is located in the historic center: a cluster of adjoining houses with only two openings for entry and exit. Another testament to the area’s older architectural history is Cà dei Muscun, one of the oldest houses in Valmalenco. The year 1504 is inscribed on its facade.
The churches also reflect different historical periods. The present-day parish church, Chiesa dei SS. Rocco, Fabiano e Sebastiano, was built in 1661 and consecrated in 1666. It was expanded in the 1960s, and its facade was redesigned. Chiesa di Santa Elisabetta was built between 1719 and 1721 in the hamlet of Pantanaccio.
The developed religious trail “Cavalera” leads from the image shrine in Contrada Negrini, past the chapel at Bricalli, to Curada Bassa. Points of interest along the way include two niches and a wooden crucifix attached to a building.
