Mazzo di Valtellina lies at the foot of the Passo del Mortirolo, also known as the Passo della Foppa. The peaks reach almost 3,000 metres; the pass itself is at 1,852 metres. Mountain scenery, routes, and historical heritage give a trip here several possible focuses. If you’re looking for a hotel in Mazzo di Valtellina, your reason for travelling can help you decide where to start: Is your main interest a cycling trip, paths along the Adda, architecture, or regional cuisine?

The climb to the Mortirolo

The climb from Mazzo to the pass is 12.4 kilometres long and rises from 552 to 1,852 metres. Its average gradient is 10.5 per cent, with some sections exceeding 20 per cent. When planning your day, therefore, consider not only the distance but also the elevation gain and steep sections. Road conditions can change; check them before setting out.

Cycling and hiking trails with different profiles

The Sentiero Valtellina is a 114-kilometre cycling and hiking trail along the Adda. It runs from Colico on Lake Como to Bormio in the heart of Alta Valtellina. Mazzo is considered a starting point for exploring the trail. The local starting point and the endpoints of the full route offer different reference points for planning: along its entire length, the route follows the river between Colico and Bormio. The Sentiero Valtellina is completely closed to cars, mostly flat, and well signposted.

The Sentiero dei Castelli has a different character: this mountain biking circuit runs between Tirano and Grosio across the slopes and valley floor of the middle Valtellina. It is rated as medium difficulty, S1, and has vertical and horizontal signage. The route leads to the Torre di Pedenale. The trails can thus be distinguished by their stated profiles: the Sentiero Valtellina follows the Adda as a long cycling and hiking route, while the Sentiero dei Castelli is a designated mountain biking circuit.

Fortified quarter and church history

The fortified quarter of Pedenale is considered a unique example in the valley’s architectural history. The Chiesa di Santa Maria is also part of the area’s architectural heritage: it was built in the Romanesque period. These two landmarks offer different perspectives, from the fortified quarter to the Romanesque church.

Mazzo was also the main settlement of an ancient valley community, regarded as one of the four oldest valley communities in the Valtellina. The parish church of Santo Stefano originally exercised jurisdiction from Sondalo to Sernio. These places indicate the wide extent of that church jurisdiction at the time; Mazzo’s former role as the main settlement also points to its historical importance in the valley.

Scenery and regional cuisine

Set among fields and orchards, Mazzo enjoys a panoramic location at the foot of the Mortirolo. This landscape offers a different focus from the climb to the pass and the longer routes along the Adda. You can therefore plan your trip around the things that interest you most: the Mortirolo’s elevation gain, the course of a cycling and hiking trail, or the historic buildings.

Local cuisine can also be part of your trip. You can try Bresaola IGP at local agriturismi and restaurants; availability may vary. Together with the scenery and historical sights, this culinary aspect adds another dimension to the sporting opportunities during your stay.
