Prata Camportaccio lies on a Quaternary moraine amphitheatre deposited by glaciers. At the foot of Monte Beleniga and Pizzo Prata, the rocks of Dona also shape the area. The Schiesone stream continues to erode the foundations of the ancient moraines, while the Trebecca forms a waterfall in Porettina vecchia. The geology, waterways and trails give your stay a tangible landscape setting.

Hiking trails and access routes to Rifugio Il Biondo

The Pista della Rebbia runs from Prata Camportaccio via Via San Cristoforo to Pratella, passing through Bilinghero, Stovano Inferiore and Stovano Superiore. Another footpath to Rifugio Il Biondo crosses the bridge over the Schiesone: after about an hour, you reach Pratella, followed by another roughly one and a half hours to the refuge. These times are approximate and apply to this footpath.

One route to the refuge runs from Chiavenna to Dona in Prata Camportaccio, then climbs via Lottano, Nirola and Pradotti. Two routes on either side of Val Schiesone are described for the hike to the refuge. The fork before Uschione leads into the Schiesone valley, dominated by Pizzo di Prata, and climbs to Alpe Pradotti and Alpe Belvedere. Another path from Prata to Uschione reaches the small settlements of Uschione and Nesossi after a short detour to Lotteno. Check route conditions before setting out on these hikes.

Rifugio Il Biondo is unstaffed; overnight stays can be reserved through its website. If you plan to stay overnight, check availability well in advance. For another hike through chestnut groves, try the Sentiero del castagneto: this easy circular trail also passes through old settlement centres and traditional Grèe, the buildings used for smoking chestnuts.

Chestnut groves and local traditions

The chestnut grove of Prata Camportaccio covers more than ten hectares. Since 2002, more than 200 sweet chestnut trees have been cared for there through conservation pruning and grafting onto wild rootstock. The traditional Grèe along the chestnut trail illustrate how the harvest was once used. Five chestnut varieties from Prata Camportaccio are the only ones in Lombardy included in the Register of Agricultural and Food Biodiversity; regional recognition was published in 2023.

Rostrato di Valchiavenna maize is also part of local agriculture: since 2017, the Consorzio Forestale has grown it on small plots in Prata Camportaccio. “La giornata del castagneto” traditionally takes place on the last Sunday in October in Stova all’Orlo di Prata and includes educational visits for schools or groups. Check the event dates if you plan to attend.

Rock carvings and historic landmarks

Along the path between Chiavenna and the hamlet of Dona, you can see rock carvings dating from the Late Bronze Age. Their location was particularly well suited to keeping watch over the valley; the carvings also show that Prata was an important landmark in the valley’s prehistory. The church of Sant’Eusebio is first documented in 1178.

At the San Cassiano stop, a small bell tower marks the church that replaced a medieval church in 1893 after it was destroyed by a flood. Prata Camportaccio is also home to an atmospheric cluster of crotti near the railway, making it a pleasant short stop along the route.

Planning your stay

The routes described differ in their starting points and main attractions: you can plan around the chestnut trail, the access routes towards the refuge or the historic landmarks. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these themes can help you decide what to focus on. The footpath timings from Prata are about an hour to Pratella and another roughly one and a half hours to the refuge; overnight stays there must be reserved through the website.
