Discover Livigno: lake, trails and local culture
Accommodation in Livigno
Livigno offers several distinct highlights to consider when planning a trip: Lago di Livigno, flow trails with different destinations, and insights into traditional architecture and history. Depending on whether you want to focus on nature, trails or local culture, you’ll find different starting points for your stay.
Lago di Livigno and the national park
Lago di Livigno lies near the town, in the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio and on the border between Italy and Switzerland. The lake can therefore be considered both part of Livigno’s surroundings and of a larger protected area and border region. The park in the Province of Sondrio covers just under 50,000 hectares. Its territory includes six municipalities in Alta Valtellina, including Livigno.
Flow trails with different destinations
The routes and destinations of the two flow trails are also easy to distinguish. The Coast to Coast Flow Trail leads from the summit of Carosello 3000 to the Rifugio Costaccia mountain hut. It follows the ridge that separates Livigno’s main valley from the upper Val Federia. The Roller Coaster Flow Trail is the natural continuation of Coast to Coast: it leads from the Rifugio Costaccia mountain hut down to the town and offers an impressive view of Lago di Livigno. The destination is especially useful for comparing the two trails: the mountain hut for Coast to Coast, and the town for Roller Coaster.
Wooden architecture and church history
Traditional homes in Livigno retain their wooden architecture and often have an L-shaped rustico. The larch-board roofs are designed to prevent snow from sliding off. The local building style thus makes it easy to distinguish the shape of the house from the function of its roofing.
The existence of the Church of Santa Maria Nascente, initially dedicated to Santa Maria, is first documented in a record from 1325. The church was rebuilt around the middle of the 15th century and consecrated in 1469. Its written documentation, rebuilding and consecration are therefore distinct milestones in its history. According to the municipality, the church is easy to access and barrier-free.
Museum and insights into dairy processing
The MUS! Museo di Livigno e Trepalle is housed in an old home that reflects local traditions. As an ethnographic museum, it introduces visitors to the area’s customs and traditions through an innovative tour. While the church’s history spans different historical periods, the museum tour focuses on local ways of life and customs passed down through generations.
An audio-guided visit to the Latteria di Livigno explains various methods of processing milk and making its products, including yoghurt and cheese. The visit covers both the processing stages and specific products.
