Grosotto brings together medieval architecture, religious art and trails in the Valtellina. To assess whether the town is right for your stay, two interests are particularly relevant: cultural history and time outdoors.

Cultural history in the townscape

Grosotto preserves examples of medieval architecture as well as homes from the 15th and 16th centuries. On a stroll along Via Patrioti, you can see old manor houses and chapels. A fountain and washhouse dating from 1695 can also be seen there. The street thus offers a direct way to explore historic buildings associated with different periods in the town’s history.

The Santuario della Beata Vergine delle Grazie began as a small church in 1487, after Grosotto escaped the destruction of the town by the people of Graubünden. The Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie di Grosotto houses a wooden sculpture from the 16th century, attributed to Giov. Angelo del Maio, who came from Pavia. The organ was made in 1713–1714 by Giov. Battista del Piaz of Cles in Val di Non (Trento). The attribution and date provide a specific historical context for the town’s religious art.

The parish church of Sant'Eusebio also features architectural details: its bell tower has two levels of triple windows, an octagonal drum and a dome. The tower was built in 1900 to a design by the engineer Pinchetti, replacing an earlier one from 1756. The dates make it possible to trace the transition from the earlier structure to the later tower.

Rock carvings and medieval castles

The Rock Engravings Archaeological Park between Grosio and Grosotto includes the Rupe Magna. The large rock bears more than 5,000 rock carvings of human figures, animals and geometric designs; some date from the Late Neolithic. The motifs and their dating make the site a distinctive destination for travellers interested in archaeology and early art.

The rock carvings can only be visited as part of the “Alla scoperta della Rupe Magna” guided tour. As tour arrangements may change, check the latest information before your visit. The area containing the medieval castles in the Archaeological Park is separate: it is open to visitors at any time, free of charge and without a guide. Check the current operating conditions before travelling.

Parks, walks and hikes

Parco Prati di Punta is a green recreation area on the Adda River, near the centre of Grosotto. The park is also a stop on the Sentiero Valtellina. It has two artificial lakes for sport fishing: one is intended for experienced anglers, the other for beginners and children. This distinction helps you choose the fishing option that suits your experience level.

The park also includes the Punta Park play area, with slides, swings, wooden features, climbing walls and a zip line. A picnic area has tables, benches and barbecue facilities. Facilities and conditions may change; check the latest information before planning a visit.

From Grosotto, you can go hiking in the Val Grosina. The Sentieri di Pace trails, part of the Cornin 15-18 project, pass through forests, follow old military roads and lead to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Valtellina. The trails are suitable for easy walks, trekking and mountain biking. The options can therefore be chosen according to the activity you have in mind: the Val Grosina is a hiking destination, while the Cornin project’s trails combine several forms of outdoor activity and landscape experiences.
