Tirano: Culture, Wine Country and the Bernina Express
Accommodation in Tirano
If you’re looking for a hotel in Tirano, you can plan your stay around the things that interest you: Renaissance architecture, regional history, wine or a trip on the Bernina Express. The cultural and scenic attractions differ considerably and offer practical guidance for planning your trip.
Wine Country and Sforzato
The terraced vineyards of Valtellina stretch along the rocky slopes on the Rhaetian side, from the municipality of Buglio in Monte to the municipality of Tirano. The wine country therefore extends beyond the town itself and provides a regional setting for a wine-focused stay.
At Plozza Vini Tirano, the Sforzato experience includes a visit to the adjacent vineyard, a tour of the barrique cellar and a tasting. Rye bread or breadsticks with Casera DOP cheese are also served. A reservation is required; confirm the current reservation terms and availability before your visit.
Basilica and Palazzo Salis
The Basilica of Madonna di Tirano is an important example of Renaissance architecture in Valtellina. Its richly decorated floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross with three naves. The basilica also houses a monumental wooden organ, construction of which began in 1608. As a spiritual and cultural symbol of Valtellina, the basilica combines architectural details with the town’s regional significance.
Palazzo Salis offers a different perspective on the history of Valtellina. The historic residence dates from between 1630 and 1690. Ten frescoed rooms served as a political center for Valtellina’s history in the 17th and 18th centuries. A museum tour takes you through Baroque rooms; check the current opening details before your visit.
Insights into Life in Valtellina
The Museo Etnografico Tiranese presents Valtellina across thirteen sensory rooms. Its focus is on rural life and mountain know-how. The rooms and objects on display bring this focus to life: the basement houses a wine press and an olive oil mill. The first and second floors include a weaving room, a room with a painted ceiling, a kitchen, a stüa and livestock-farming equipment. Visitors interested in everyday life and working history will find a variety of ways to explore the museum’s themes here.
Rail Journey and Circular Walk
For a rail journey, the Bernina Express departs from Tirano station. The route runs through the canton of GraubĂĽnden between Valposchiavo and the Engadine. This is distinct from the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina landscape: it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2008. The journey from Tirano and the World Heritage Site therefore offer two different perspectives on the railway landscape.
You can also choose a different focus on foot. The hike to Santa Perpetua is a circular route: it starts and ends at Piazza delle Stazioni and passes the Basilica of Madonna di Tirano and the Romanesque Chiesetta di Santa Perpetua. Santa Perpetua can also be reached via the Cammino Mariano delle Alpi trail. Check trail conditions before setting out.
