Aprica: Culture, Ski History and Mountain Sports
Accommodation in Aprica
Aprica lies on the pass connecting Valtellina and Val Camonica. A stay here brings together a range of interests: churches and murals, the history of skiing, cycling, and nature watching. If you are looking for a hotel in Aprica, you can start planning your trip around these interests. The locations vary: the Campetti ski area is right in town, the Pian di Gembro Nature Reserve is a few minutes from Aprica, and the cycling route starts in Aprica and leads to the Mortirolo.
Churches, Murals and a Mill
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta has a Baroque portal dating from 1778 and frescoes by Turildo Conconi. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in the 13th century and is reached on Aprica’s tourist walking tour. The two details refer to different points in time: for Saints Peter and Paul, it is the church’s construction; for Santa Maria Assunta, it is the date of the portal.
Murals by local artist Alcide Pancot can be found in Aprica’s contrade (neighborhoods). In S. Maria, scenes from customs and everyday life are depicted; in S. Pietro and Dosso, the subjects include mountain landscapes, animals, and flowers. The motifs vary by location, from social life to depictions of nature, complementing the churches with art from the contrade.
The old mill Il Mulino dei Plaz, also known as Mulì di Plaz, is another part of the local cultural heritage. It consists of two very similar stone buildings constructed near the Aprica stream. The two similar structures draw attention to their shared architectural form and stonework.
Ski History and Activities
At the Museo dello Sci e della Montagna, you can trace the development of skiing from the first simple wooden skis to modern racing skis. The Campetti ski area is right in town and is suitable for beginners trying skiing for the first time. Aprica thus offers two different connections to skiing: its development through equipment, and an area suited to people new to the sport.
The “Il legno è vita” (Wood Is Life) themed trail runs from Malga Magnolta to Rifugio CAI Valtellina. Along the trail, several information panels explain the importance of wood. Archery is also available in an area close to Aprica. These activities range from a themed trail with information about wood to a sporting option near town.
Nature and Cycling Route
The Pian di Gembro Nature Reserve is a few minutes from Aprica. Easy, undemanding paths cross the ancient glacial peat bog, where rare plants can be observed. The area combines a peat bog landscape with paths specifically described as undemanding; for nature enthusiasts, observing rare plants is the main attraction.
The “Mortirolo from Aprica” cycling route starts in Aprica at an elevation of 1,200 meters and climbs to 1,800 meters at Mortirolo. It is 27.8 kilometers long. The recommended riding period is from late spring to late autumn; conditions in the mountains can vary. Check the route conditions before setting out. The route length, elevation points, and changing mountain conditions are therefore important factors to consider when planning your ride.
Swimming Pool
Aprica has a municipal semi-Olympic swimming pool with heated water from local springs. It operates seasonally. Check whether the pool is open during your visit before you go.
