Sondalo – Trails, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Sondalo
Sondalo combines outdoor activities with local history: Val di Rezzalo, mineralogical features and historic sites each offer a different focus. When comparing hotels in Sondalo, first consider whether you’d like to base your stay around hiking trails, geology or history.
Landscape and trails
Part of the municipality of Sondalo lies within Stelvio National Park. Val di Rezzalo has easy trails for hiking and mountain biking; ski touring is also possible in winter. The valley also preserves traditional wooden and stone huts. Alongside outdoor activities, traditional building methods and the valley’s rural character are defining features of Val di Rezzalo.
To reach Val di Rezzalo, leave the SS38 at Le Prese. From there, follow the signs to Frontale and continue to Fontanaccia. After parking your car, an old mule track dating from the First World War begins there. Check parking and road conditions locally. As of August 30, 2026, bus service to Val di Rezzalo had been temporarily suspended because of a landslide; check the latest status before setting out.
The Sentiero dei Minerali offers a different kind of outing, taking visitors through Sondalo’s mineralogical heritage. The trail features anatase, tourmalines, zircons, apatites, native arsenic and quartz. The focus is therefore different: Val di Rezzalo is known for its trails and seasonal outdoor activities, while the Sentiero dei Minerali is of geological interest.
History and townscape
The Museo dei Sanatori di Sondalo documents the history of the sanatoriums built in Valtellina in the 20th century to combat tuberculosis. The visitor route passes through rooms that were once used to admit patients. This gives the history of the sanatoriums a tangible connection to the place, without associating the route with a different building complex.
The historic center also reveals the area’s older architectural history: it is home to old, rustic houses with frescoes dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Castello di Boffalora was the site of 13th-century clashes between the Guelph factions of the Torriani and the Ghibelline Corrado Venosta. The houses, frescoes and castle thus reflect different periods in Sondalo’s history.
Migiondo, a rural hamlet of Sondalo, preserves traces of the area’s former farming way of life. These include stone houses, hay barns, stables, manure heaps, wash houses and frescoes. The variety of surviving features makes Migiondo a distinct point of interest alongside the historic center and the history of the sanatoriums.
Since 2010, guided summer tours of the Villaggio Morelli complex and park have been organized with experts in architecture, landscape, art history and forestry. If a guided tour is important for your stay, check the current seasonal schedule.
