Traona between cultural history and landscape
Accommodation in Traona
Traona brings together the landscape of the Costiera dei Cech, churches, cultural history and paths along the Adda. If you are looking for a hotel in Traona, you can shape your stay around your interests, whether historical sites and local wine traditions or paths and nature.
Landscape, cultivation and getting around
The Costiera dei Cech faces entirely south and has a particularly pronounced Mediterranean microclimate. The area of Traona includes part of the alluvial fan of the Vallone stream on the right-hand orographic bank of the Adda; part of the area also lies on the sunny Costiera dei Cech at the foot of the Rhaetian Alps. The climate is favourable to grape and olive growing, as well as flower cultivation. These features of the landscape and its cultivation give the place a character distinct from that of a mere stopover.
The SS 402 Valeriana runs through Traona and skirts the Rhaetian slope of the Valtellina. The state railway line and the SS 38 dello Stelvio are about one kilometre from Traona.
Paths along the Adda and Isola della Pescaia
The Sentiero Valtellina is a 114-kilometre cycling and walking route from Colico to Bormio along the Adda. It is about 1.3 kilometres from Traona; access points are at the bridge over the Adda or at Valletta on Isola della Pescaia. This makes it practical to access both a longer route through the Valtellina and specific points nearby, without confusing the full route with a short local path.
A 350-metre path crosses Isola della Pescaia and connects directly to the Sentiero Valtellina via the two bridges. Two covered bridges connect the island to the two banks at Traona and Cosio Valtellino; the bridges are stated to be 35 metres long. The island was enhanced and made accessible for educational and nature-study purposes in 2016. The path across the island and the long Sentiero Valtellina therefore offer different ways to explore the river landscape.
Churches and history in Traona
The Chiesa di S. Alessandro was solemnly consecrated on 30 April 1690. In Bioggio, the Chiesa di S. Maria stands at an altitude of 771 metres amid chestnut woods; the smaller chapel was last remodelled in 1757. The Oratorio di S. Ignazio di Loyola is a Baroque artistic gem whose simple design has a Neoclassical appearance. Together, these places show different facets of religious architecture and history.
The Museo San Luigi Guanella is also connected with the history of the town. Don Luigi Guanella spent three important years of his life, from 1878 to 1881, in the building that now houses the museum. The residence associated with the Museo San Luigi Guanella was converted into a museum in 1977. The premises were restored in 2012, and the new museum was inaugurated in September 2013. The Arco della Dogana recalls another historical role of Traona: it served as a customs post for trade by lake and road, and for collecting duties.
Wine traditions and local events
The Antico Torchio di Corlazzo contains a historic wine press dating from the 17th century. The large machine was used to press grape pomace and make wine. Historically, pressing grapes was not only communal work but also an opportunity to socialise. The press thus brings together technology and social tradition, while grapevines and olives are also part of the area's agricultural character.
At Traona in Cantina, characteristic wine cellars are opened and tastings are held each year. The usual date is in October; for a specific trip, it is worth checking the event dates. The Forno Sforzini is still opened to the public and put into operation for some events, allowing visitors to sample freshly baked bread and focaccia. Access is limited to these events.
The main themes are easy to distinguish when planning a trip: churches, the museum, customs history and the wine press tell the story of Traona's culture and traditions; Isola della Pescaia and the Sentiero Valtellina bring the paths and landscape along the Adda to the fore. This lets you choose which themes will shape your stay in Traona.
