Chiareggio offers several starting points for planning a stay: geological features in its open-air park, trails towards the Ventina Glacier, and a history connected with the Muretto. If you are looking for a hotel, you might first consider whether you are more interested in the landscape and trails, local history or the date of an event. The distinctions below can help you tell the different aspects of the area apart and structure your travel plans.

Geology and nature around Chiareggio

The Chiareggio Geological Park covers two hectares of open, wooded terrain. Its three educational areas have different focuses: a shelter with four geological panels, a path lined with samples of various rocks, and a natural terrace with two geological maps. As an open-air site, the park presents geological and natural features of the Alpine region. You will find different ways of presenting information: explanations on panels, rock samples along a path, and maps on the natural terrace. Marmots live near the park at the entrance to Chiareggio; their presence may vary by season. The park and the seasonal presence of marmots offer two distinct starting points for planning your visit.

Trails with different focuses

The Vittorio Sella Glaciological Trail starts in Chiareggio and heads towards the Ventina Glacier. The Alta Via della Valmalenco is a high-altitude hiking trail with eight stages and a total length of about 110 kilometres; it passes through the Chiareggio basin. The descriptions use different measures: for the Sentiero, they specify the starting point and direction, while for the Alta Via they also give the number of stages and approximate total length. This helps you distinguish a specific route towards the glacier from a multi-stage high-altitude hiking trail.

The Ferrata del Torrione Porro is a via ferrata of intermediate difficulty in Valmalenco and starts in Chiareggio. The walk to the Gerli-Porro mountain hut takes about an hour. This approximate time refers to the walk to the hut, not to the duration of the via ferrata. When planning, you can therefore distinguish clearly between the route towards the Ventina Glacier, the scope of a multi-stage high-altitude hiking trail, and the via ferrata’s difficulty rating, with the approach time given separately.

Church, Muretto and historic routes

The Church of Sant’Anna in Chiareggio was founded in 1688 at the instigation of notary Lorenzo Chiesa. It lies along the ancient Muretto route, which connected Italy with Switzerland. The patron saint’s feast is celebrated every year on the fourth Sunday in July with religious ceremonies and popular festivities. As the calendar date changes from year to year, check the date for your travel year if you are interested in attending.

Another historic stop is the Osteria del Bosco. It has existed in Chiareggio, or in the hamlet of Bosco, since the Middle Ages as a hospice. People and horses used it as a place to rest and spend the night along the historic “cavallera” road over the Muretto. This history adds a specific purpose along the route—rest and overnight accommodation for people and horses—to the story of the route connection.

Valtellina cuisine

Food interests can also play a part in planning a stay. Typical Valtellina dishes are regularly on the menu in Chiareggio; individual offerings may vary. If you have a particular dish in mind, ask about the current menu. Local cuisine adds to the geological, scenic and historical aspects you can consider when choosing a stay in Chiareggio.
