Pedesina: Mountain Scenery and Historic Trails
Accommodation in Pedesina
The entire Badile-Disgrazia group can be seen from Pedesina. The village houses sit on the valley’s steep slopes, surrounded by bright green forests. Two distinct impressions define the place: the view of the mountain group and the settlement against the wooded hillside. As you plan your stay, you can consider this landscape as a focus in its own right, alongside the historic trails and architectural history.
Mountain Views and Trail History
The ancient Via del Bitto trail runs just below Pedesina. One unique section has steps carved directly into the bare rock. This is a striking trail feature. The historic Linea Cadorna excursion route begins on Pedesina’s municipal road toward Masoncelli, at an altitude of 1,125 metres, and ends at Monte Rotondo, at 2,496 metres. Trail conditions and signage may change along this route; check both before setting out.
The route to Monte Rotondo follows an old mule track that once connected the Masoncelli area of Pedesina directly with Alpe Combana. The path is overgrown and little used. Take this condition into account when planning. This keeps both the historic connection and the trail’s current condition in view as important aspects of the route.
The Linea Cadorna defensive structures in the Val di Pai area are located at Bocchetta di Stavello, at 2,202 to 2,290 metres, and at Monte Rotondo, at 2,496 metres. These elevations place the historic sites at different heights: the Bocchetta range is lower than Monte Rotondo, listed at 2,496 metres. The Linea Cadorna route passes Casera di Combana; a monumental, centuries-old larch stands nearby.
Alpine Scenery and Local History
The upper Val di Pai has alpine pastures with a distinct mountain character. The trail between Alpe Combana and Alpe Stavello passes through a mountain landscape considered a habitat for wild animals; sightings cannot be guaranteed. At Val Mala, by the Torrente Bitto, nature is unspoiled and sometimes wild.
Pedesina preserves rural alpine architecture, including 18th-century stone houses, wooden mountain huts, hay barns, and outbuildings built using log construction or unplastered stone. The present-day Church of Santa Croce e Sant'Antonio appears to date from the 16th century. The Church of Sant'Antonio began to have its own benefice and curate in the 15th century.
Another cultural feature is a 1649 Last Supper painting by local artist Antonio Tarabini, located in Pedesina. The craft tradition is also part of the village’s history: Pedesina and Rasura were once known throughout the province for weaving the traditional Pezzotto rug on looms. Local people also processed hemp and flax into high-quality textiles and handcrafted products. These crafts have disappeared.
