Maroggia is a rural settlement on the crest of a natural spur planted with vineyards. The village developed along the contours of a moraine hill, shaped by the Maroggia stream branching between Val Làresa to the west and Val d’Orta to the east. Together, viticulture and this distinctive landform shape the character of the village.

Landscape and Local History

The description of the settlement as following the contours gives a concrete indication of how Maroggia developed: the settlement follows the shape of the moraine hill. The natural spur and its vineyards provide another point of reference for understanding the rural surroundings. The geographical features mentioned should be clearly distinguished: Val Làresa lies to the west, Val d’Orta to the east; between them, the branching of the Maroggia stream shaped the hill. This connection between terrain and settlement pattern makes Maroggia a destination for travellers interested in the landscape as much as in the history of the place.

The Church of Santa Margherita

The church of Santa Margherita is located in the hamlet of Maroggia. At the end of the 17th century, the heads of Maroggia’s families commissioned the construction of the church. Santa Margherita is therefore both a specific religious site in the village and a reference point in its history. The building initiative can be placed in a specific time and place: it was undertaken by the heads of Maroggia’s families in the late 17th century. For those exploring the area, the church adds a historical and religious dimension to the landscape.

Trails and Different Points of Reference

The official vineyard walking route, Itinerario tra i vigneti valtellinesi, reaches the viewpoint at Contrada Maroggia after about two kilometres through old mountain hamlets and chestnut woods. The approximate distance, the scenery along the way and the named destination offer three different points of reference for understanding this route. The Via dei Terrazzamenti has a different location along its route: between Monastero and Maroggia, it passes through the small hamlet of Piasci. The first route is described in terms of its approximate length and viewpoint, while the second is described by its route through Piasci between the places named.

The Anello Maroggia is an excursion route in Berbenno di Valtellina. The three route descriptions should be understood as separate points of reference: the Itinerario tra i vigneti valtellinesi is described by its approximate length, scenery and destination; the Via dei Terrazzamenti by its route through Piasci; and the Anello Maroggia as an excursion route in Berbenno di Valtellina. This makes it possible to distinguish the routes mentioned without treating their courses as the same.

Viticulture and Local Tradition

Viticulture is both part of Maroggia’s character and a subject in its own right. The Maroggia wine-growing subzone lies in the western part of the municipality of Berbenno di Valtellina, on the border with Buglio in Monte, at elevations between 270 and 550 metres. A large proportion of the vines in this subzone are said to be old, more than 40 years of age. The elevation and vine age refer to the wine-growing subzone; the rural settlement of Maroggia, in turn, lies on the spur planted with vineyards. This distinction helps separate the village landscape from the wine-growing area, even though both bear the name Maroggia.

The tradition surrounding the Sagra di San Bello is also part of the local food culture: it is associated with eating meals featuring chicken on the saint’s day. This custom adds another cultural point of reference alongside viticulture. Together, the landscape, church, trails and food culture offer different ways to get to know Maroggia as a travel destination.
