Discover Oga: mountain panoramas, nature and history
Accommodation in Oga
Oga lies at an altitude of 1,500 metres, amid extensive coniferous forests. The peaks of the Central Alps surround the village, including Ortles, Gran ZebrĂą, Tresero, Thurwieser, Cevedale, S. Matteo, Confinale, Reit and Cima Piazzi. Oga also sits on a very sunny panoramic balcony overlooking Bormio and Valdidentro. The forest setting and the panorama are two distinct features of the landscape.
Paluaccio di Oga Nature Reserve
Paluaccio di Oga Nature Reserve covers more than 30 hectares. The peat bog dates back approximately 13,000 years. The carnivorous plant Drosera rotundifolia grows in the reserve. The size of the protected area, the peat bog’s long history of development and the named plant species offer different ways to appreciate the natural history of the same place.
Forte Venini, the church and a tradition
Forte Venini was equipped with four long-range guns, with a range of approximately 13 km. Following extensive restoration, the fort was reopened to the public in 2003.
The Church of Saints Lorenzo and Colombano became a parish church in 1632 and is dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The present church was built in 1904 in the Neo-Gothic style, after a devastating fire destroyed the earlier medieval chapel. Two valuable altarpieces dating from 1538 are kept in the church. Together, these dates reflect different layers of the church’s history: its parish status in 1632, the Neo-Gothic church built in 1904 and the older altarpieces from 1538.
For the feast of Saint Lawrence, the traditional “fiamme di S. Lorenzo” — large bonfires — are lit on the natural terrace of Tadè, which overlooks the village.
