Discover Hérault: Heritage, Water and Outdoor Activities
Accommodation in Hérault
In Hérault, long routes for outdoor activities meet waterscapes and historic sites. The Canal du Midi, the Étang de Thau lagoon and a rich cultural heritage offer different ways to shape a trip. When planning, consider whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors, experience places by the water, or focus on architecture and history.
Routes, sports and water
As part of the PDESI, the département supports hiking, climbing, canoeing and kayaking, paragliding, cycling and sailing as self-guided outdoor sports. Hérault has 3,200 kilometres of hiking trails and 3,580 kilometres of mountain-bike routes; these figures may be updated in the future. Hérault has 87 kilometres of coastline and waters used for water sports.
One longer route is the Larzac–Mediterranean route: it runs for 250 kilometres through Hérault, between Millau and Cap d’Agde. If you plan to follow it, check route conditions and services before setting off.
The Canal du Midi and Étang de Thau
The Canal du Midi is a UNESCO-listed navigable waterway, 360 kilometres long, with 328 structures. Its main section runs for more than 240 kilometres and reaches the Étang de Thau at Marseillan. Near Agde, another section, 0.5 kilometres long, connects the Hérault River to the town’s circular lock.
The Étang de Thau is a saltwater lagoon connected to the Mediterranean via Sète and Marseillan. It covers 7,500 hectares; more than 400 aquatic species have been recorded there. Swimming is possible in the lagoon, though local bathing conditions should be checked before your trip. The lagoon offers a different relationship with water from the canal: here, it is a vast body of water with recorded biodiversity and swimming opportunities; there, it is a navigable waterway with locks and structures.
Abbeys, bridges and historic sites
Gellone Abbey was founded in 804 and became an important spiritual and cultural centre of Languedoc. Since 1998, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.
The Pont du Diable is described as having been built in 873 and is considered one of France’s oldest medieval bridges. It is listed as a historic monument, forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and belongs to the Gorges de l’Hérault Grand Site de France. Seasonal swimming, canoeing and paddling are available at the site; access to the water and conditions depend on the season. So visitors drawn by its history can also enjoy a seasonal connection to water-based activities.
Hérault’s cultural heritage also ranges from dinosaur fossils and prehistoric caves to Roman villas and medieval abbeys, as well as capitelles, former manufactories and wine cellars. The Ambrussum Archaeological Museum offers free admission, guided visits and the immersive Ambrussum 3D app. Check visitor arrangements and digital offerings before your visit.
Regional produce and culinary discoveries
Pélardon AOP is produced in the mountainous areas and Mediterranean garrigue of Hérault. Its flavour is influenced by the plants goats eat while grazing for more than half the year. Grazing helps preserve the characteristic garrigue and Cévenol maquis landscapes and opens up the vegetation. A second protected product links parts of the département to a wider production area: parts of Hérault are included in the Roquefort milk production and processing area. Roquefort is made from raw whole milk from Lacaune sheep and aged for at least 90 days.
The culinary scene includes markets, vineyards, shellfish farms and producers’ farms. The Bouzigues market showcases produce from the Thau Archipelago. Bouzigues holds the “site remarquable du goût” distinction; restaurants by the lagoon serve oysters and mussels. Wine tourism experiences invite you to meet winemakers and find places to taste and buy wine. Check market hours and the visiting and tasting options offered by individual businesses for your travel dates.
Then compare the destinations that interest you for your plans, and take the relevant conditions into account for seasonal activities. This way, you can choose where to stay based on the experiences you actually intend to enjoy.
