Riols: Hiking, Landscapes and Village History
Accommodation in Riols
Riols can be discovered through outdoor activities and its multifaceted village character. For planning your trip, a range of routes, a green valley and a plateau, as well as historic paths and buildings, take centre stage. This lets you tailor your choices to the things that interest you locally.
Hiking and Cycling Routes in Riols
The Voie Verte du Haut-Languedoc Passa Païs passes through Riols and offers a route for environmentally friendly travel. Check local conditions before setting out. For a challenging hike, the Chemin des Légendes is a clearly described option: this difficult circular hike is 13 kilometres long and is listed as taking 5 hours and 30 minutes, with 775 metres of elevation gain and loss each.
Along the way, information signs explain shale and gneiss, menhirs and dolmens, and the legend of the Saut de Vesoles. The Sentier des Mille Marches follows the Chemin des Légendes to the plateau and a viewpoint at the Saut de Vesoles. The Saut is described as a geological fault in the Bureau stream. This makes the hike a way to explore the landscape alongside geological, archaeological and legendary themes.
The Boucle Cyclo N°30 is a different circular route: it is rated easy, measures 22 kilometres and has a listed duration of 2 hours. It has 660 metres of elevation gain and loss each. Near Ardouane, the route includes the Pont aux Vélos; it also passes the hamlet of Ardouane and its former monastery. Compared with the Chemin des Légendes, the cycling route is longer, but has a shorter listed duration and a different difficulty rating. The Chemin is classed as a difficult hike, while the Boucle is rated as an easy cycling route.
The Espace Trail Montagnes du Caroux – Parcours 2 – Notre-Dame de Trédos is also a circular route in Riols. It is 13 kilometres long, rated moderate and listed as taking 3 hours; it starts at Place du Foirail. A notice dated 13 February 2026 states that the Trail Notre-Dame de Trédos is closed until further notice following the latest bad weather. Check its status before making plans. The trail reaches a viewpoint overlooking Riols and the Jaur Valley.
Valley, Plateau and Village
The local landscape stretches from a green valley at an altitude of 250 metres to the Somail Plateau, which reaches a summit of 950 metres. This range gives the landscape around Riols a distinctive sense of elevation. Lac de Vésoles and its waterfalls also offer numerous hiking routes, adding to the options for visitors interested in trails through the countryside.
Several distinctive details shape the old village: Rue Basse du Somail is paved with stones, alongside water-bearing lanes and the projecting fronts of former shops. The Pont Vieux crosses the Jaur and forms part of a recommended walk through the village. Visitors wishing to combine village history with a stroll through its streets can take in both a specific historic structure and characteristic features of older buildings.
Churches, Chapel and Garden
The Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Paul bears witness to Riols’ textile boom from the 16th century onwards. The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Trédos has a longer history of its own: it was founded in the 11th century under the name Notre-Dame des Trésors and remained under the authority of Saint-Pons Abbey until the end of the 18th century. The viewpoint on the trail and the chapel’s history represent different aspects of this place: its landscape and historical development.
At the Jardin de Mamie Rose, a guided tour with commentary is offered of Jean Aribaud’s vegetable garden. Allow around 1 hour and 30 minutes for the visit. Visits are possible in summer by prior reservation; bear this seasonal requirement in mind when planning your trip. Along with the hiking routes, cycling route and walk by the Pont Vieux, the garden offers another way to discover Riols that takes a manageable amount of time.
