Saint-Jean-de-Cuculles offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay: a botanical nature trail, Notre-Dame de la Cabasse with views of the village, the surrounding plain and Pic Saint-Loup, the priory with historic architectural features, and wine-related experiences. Highlights range from plants and landscapes to architecture and winemaking.

Plants, Views and Trails

The botanical nature trail in Saint-Jean-de-Cuculles is marked and features 62 information boards. They describe a range of plant species and bring the trail’s botanical focus to life. For travellers who want to explore the plants in the village in more detail, the trail’s particular appeal lies in combining a marked route with descriptions of the plants.

A footpath leads to Notre-Dame de la Cabasse, a statue dedicated to the Virgin Mary. From Notre-Dame de la Cabasse, you can enjoy views of the village, the surrounding plain and Pic Saint-Loup. While the information boards focus on plant species, this spot offers a perspective on the landscape. The choice between the two highlights therefore comes down to the botanical nature trail or views of the village, plain and Pic Saint-Loup.

The treetop adventure course offers fun and sporty routes. In a natural area in Saint-Jean-de-Cuculles at the foot of Pic Saint-Loup, visitors can enjoy large zip lines as well as fun and sporty routes.

The Church and the History of the Priory

The priory includes a small church built in the 11th century. Its nave has a single aisle and a barrel vault. These terms describe different architectural features: a single-aisle nave has one main aisle, while a barrel vault describes the curved shape of the ceiling.

In the 14th century, the church was raised by one storey and fitted with machicolations to serve as a refuge for villagers and as a watchtower. The church thus also served a protective and observational purpose. A Visigothic tombstone dating from the 5th to 8th centuries can also be seen at the priory. It predates the church’s construction phases and adds another chapter to the history preserved here.

Fountains and Wine

The fountains along La Route des puits have been preserved and restored. A village fountain on La Route des puits was dug in 1880 and is 18 metres deep. This brings the preservation of several fountains together with the precisely documented history of a single fountain. A small car park at Pont de Yorgues marks the access point.

Domaine de Mortiès lies on the southern slope of Pic Saint-Loup in Saint-Jean-de-Cuculles. Its 14 hectares of vineyards are surrounded by 85 hectares of woodland. The comparison shows the significant difference between the vineyard area and its wooded surroundings. Free wine tastings are offered at the estate.

Les Remparts de Cuculles offers a different wine experience: a day devoted to grape harvesting and winemaking introduces visitors to the techniques of harvesting and natural winemaking. The two offers differ in focus: Domaine de Mortiès centres on wine tasting at the estate, while the day at Les Remparts introduces techniques related to harvesting and natural winemaking. You can choose between a tasting and an introduction to these techniques.
