Things to do in Mèze range from exploring the lagoon and its wetlands to discovering historic trails, fishing and oyster farming. If you’re looking for a hotel in Mèze, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: nature at the Étang de Thau, a walk through the historic center, a beach visit or a cultural program. Some activities have set dates or seasonal access conditions; take these into account when planning your trip.

Lagoon, Wetlands and Waterside Trails

The Étang de Thau is a Natura 2000 lagoon with nearly 400 aquatic species, including the Mediterranean seahorse. This makes the lagoon’s natural environment a distinct attraction alongside the activities in the town center. La Conque, a 45-hectare wetland on the edge of Mèze, is also designated a Natura 2000 site. It was created on the site of former salt pans.

Different rules apply to the two paths at La Conque: the northern path is open year-round, while the southern path is closed from mid-April to mid-October to protect nesting birds. Check the conditions before visiting. When planning, you can also take into account which access route is open during your chosen period.

For 2026, the free Sentier sous-marin de l’Étang de Thau in Mèze was included in the visitor offerings. The 250-meter underwater trail has five observation stations. Equipment and access conditions may vary seasonally, so check before visiting.

A described cycling route also follows the water: cycling loop no. 25, “Le Tour de l’Étang de Thau,” passes through Mèze. There, the voie verte runs uninterrupted along the Étang to Balaruc, with views of the oyster beds. As route conditions can change, check the current state of the route before setting out.

Historic Trails and Culture

The historic walking tour of Mèze takes one hour and leads through the historic center. Ten illustrated panels explain the town’s past. The route follows in the footsteps of fishermen, merchant sailors and winegrowers, passing through the streets and squares of the center, which was once protected by ramparts. The tour combines a manageable time commitment with a close-up look at the town’s former occupations and history.

The Chapelle des Pénitents was built in the 12th century and restored by the White Penitents in the 17th century. In summer, it hosts concerts and exhibitions organized by Les Amis des Pénitents. If you’d like to combine a visit with an event, check the dates in advance.

Typical flat-bottomed lagoon fishing boats have been preserved at the Port des Nacelles. Known as “nacelles,” they are a testament to traditional fishing techniques that are still practiced today. The harbor’s name and boats offer a tangible glimpse into the local fishing tradition.

For music events, the location and dates matter too: the 2026 edition of the Festival de Thau was scheduled to return to the port of Mèze, right on the lagoon, after several stops around the Bassin de Thau. Four evenings of concerts featuring music from around the world were planned there from Thursday, July 23, to Sunday, July 26, 2026. Programs for later editions may change; check the dates and program when planning your trip.

Oyster Farming, the Mussel Harbor and More Visitor Options

The Mourre Blanc in Mèze is the largest mussel-farming harbor in the Mediterranean. La Noisette d’Oc offers visits to its farm and oyster-farming demonstration workshops by request. These include practical tips and a lesson on opening oysters. As this visit option requires advance inquiry, be sure to plan accordingly.

At the Musée parc des Dinosaures, about 80 percent of the fossils displayed in the cases are original specimens. The figure is explicitly approximate and describes the proportion of originals among the fossils on display.

Plage du Thalassa offers calm swimming near the town center. The shallow water by the shore makes it suitable for families. A beach visit can therefore be a focus in its own right when choosing activities, alongside nature watching, culture and lagoon-related attractions.
