Boujan-Sur-Libron is shaped by a variety of cultural, historical and winegrowing themes. These include the Église Saint-Etienne, the Prieuré Saint-Marcel and the vineyards along the Libron; recurring events also matter if you are planning a trip for a specific time. You can therefore plan your stay around architectural history and wine, or around a particular event date.

Church History and Architectural Traces

The Église Saint-Etienne de Boujan was built in the 11th century on the ruins of an earlier Visigothic chapel and rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 14th century. The tower was completed in the 17th century; its keystone at the top bears the date 1666. Around the church, narrow streets form a circulade, a layout characteristic of villages in Languedoc. The street plan is therefore also part of the town’s historic character.

The Prieuré Saint-Marcel also brings together different historical layers: it stands on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa. During its restoration, Romanesque capitals, vault supports and a stone oculus were uncovered. Capitals are the upper ends of columns or pillars, vault supports carry a vault, and an oculus is a circular opening. These architectural features draw attention to different aspects of the priory’s architecture and add another site with architectural details to the story of the church.

Vineyards and Domaine La Jeanne

The vineyards of Boujan-Sur-Libron include red and white grape varieties. The red varieties include Syrah, Carignan, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon; the white varieties include Chardonnay, Muscat and Viognier. The breakdown by grape variety gives wine enthusiasts a practical guide when exploring local winegrowing.

Domaine La Jeanne is a 27-hectare Vin de pays estate on the slopes of the Libron in Boujan-Sur-Libron. It produces and vinifies 13 bottled wines as well as three wines offered on tap; the selection may change over time. The estate sells its own products and offers wine tastings. The tasting price is available on request. Arrange your visit and tasting directly with the estate before making plans around them.

Events and Sporting Activities

The FĂŞte du Cheval et du Toro takes place every year on the first weekend in August and lasts three days. It is free, family-oriented and designed as an educational cultural event. Individual activities may change. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific dates and program in advance.

The Ronde boujanaise uses a 2.2-kilometre circuit, ridden 35 times for a total distance of 77 kilometres. The Bouj’an Courant road race attracts more than 500 participants; the number may vary from one edition to another. The two sporting events offer different points of reference for planning: the Ronde focuses on the circuit and total distance, while the race focuses on participant numbers.

Walking Route and Visit Planning

The Le Sentier Méditerranéen walking route passes through pine forests, vineyards and Mediterranean garrigue. This combination includes woodland, areas of winegrowing and the characteristic Mediterranean scrubland. As trail conditions can vary with the seasons, it is a good idea to check the current conditions before setting out.

The Musée Chapy is located in Boujan-Sur-Libron at 14 rue du Muscat and is open by prior request. Confirm the visiting arrangements before you arrive. This way, you can plan your museum visit rather than assume it will be open without prior arrangement.
