Villeneuve-Lès-Maguelone offers a variety of ways to experience culture and nature: a significant Romanesque cathedral, protected landscapes, a natural beach and cultural activities. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the places to visit and the conditions that apply to each. While the Salines are open to explore, the Réserve naturelle nationale de l’Estagnol is closed to the public. Beach activities and seasonal water sports also have different conditions.

Romanesque art and free access to the peninsula

The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Maguelone is a significant example of Romanesque art. It is a destination in its own right for anyone interested in Romanesque architecture. Access to the peninsula, the park and the Cathédrale is free and open to individual visitors. Check the current visiting arrangements before you travel. This makes it possible to combine a visit with an overview of the town’s other cultural and natural attractions, while keeping their different access conditions in mind.

Salt pans and nature reserves

The protected Les Salines de Villeneuve cover 292 hectares. The area stretches from the shores of the Étang de Vic to the foothills of the Massif de la Gardiole and lies within the Natura 2000 site of the Étangs Palavasiens. In 1992, the Conservatoire du Littoral acquired the Salines and made them a protected area. The site is open to explore and regularly hosts events and guided visits; the program may vary by season. A visit here therefore combines exploring the landscape with learning about the area’s conservation history.

Visiting the Réserve naturelle nationale de l’Estagnol is different: this 78-hectare marshland lies in the garrigue and is closed to the public. Specially designated observation points along its edge nevertheless allow visitors to observe the wildlife without disturbing the species that live there. The distinction is important in practice: the Salines can be explored, while nature observation at Estagnol takes place from the designated viewing points along its edge.

Beach and water sports at Plage du Pilou

Plage du Pilou is a natural beach where swimming, walking and relaxing are among the activities on offer. The Base nautique de loisirs Plage Maguelone is located near the lifeguard station. Open from June to August, it offers windsurfing, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boating, as well as trips on Hobie Cat Bravo and Hobie Wave boats. The seasonal dates are key to planning: water sports are available only during these months. Visiting the beach and taking part in activities at the nautical base are related, but distinct, reasons to visit.

Church, theatre and other cultural activities

The Église Saint-Etienne was built in the 12th century. Its architecture combines a Romanesque foundation with a level of window openings designed in the Gothic style. The bell tower recalls the church’s former role as a refuge and place of protection for the local population. Together, these features offer a sense of both the building’s history and its historical significance.

The Théâtre Jérôme Savary at the Centre Culturel Bérenger de Frédol offers a cultural season for a range of audiences. The program includes theatre, circus, music, dance and conferences, as well as performances suitable for families. The offerings thus go beyond visits to historic buildings and provide another way to experience the town’s culture.

Routes and outdoor activities

For cyclists, a 30-kilometre route from Montpellier to the Cathédrale de Maguelone combines wildlife observation, a climb, a beach experience and a visit to the cathedral. The Randonnée des Salines, by contrast, passes through former salt pans belonging to the Conservatoire du littoral and an area of great ecological importance. The two routes have different focuses: the cycling tour brings together several experiences along the way, while the hike explores the former salt pans and their ecological significance.

Another outdoor activity is the pump track, an urban wheeled-sports area for people aged eight and older. It is suitable for scooters, bicycles, roller skates and skateboards, among other things. In Villeneuve-Lès-Maguelone, there are therefore routes and a wheeled-sports area to choose from alongside natural and cultural attractions, each with its own focus and requirements.
